Tom Hiddleston has sent excitement through the Marvel fandom by teasing the "monumental" return of his iconic character, Loki, in the upcoming superhero epic Avengers: Doomsday. In a new interview, the actor praised the film's groundbreaking script, suggesting it will deliver something entirely new for audiences.
A God of Mischief's Surprising Comeback
While details about the highly secretive project remain scarce, Hiddleston's comments have significantly raised expectations. Speaking to GQ, the actor was cryptic about his specific role but effusive about the overall story. "My contribution has been contributed," he stated, before adding, "It is monumental. The centre of the story is absolutely brilliant, and was so surprising when I read it. It just has never been done before."
This marks Loki's first appearance in a Marvel Studios film since Avengers: Endgame in 2019, though the character's journey continued on the Disney+ series Loki. The show's second season concluded in November 2023, culminating in Loki transforming into the guardian of the multiverse. Reflecting on this evolution, Hiddleston noted, "In order to become someone different, whose story had a different ending, he had to make peace with the things he did. It gave him the power of authorship over his own story."
An All-Star Cast Assembles Against Doctor Doom
Avengers: Doomsday is shaping up to be one of the most significant ensemble pieces in Marvel history. The film will see the return of several major stars to the MCU, seven years after Avengers: Endgame. It was revealed in July 2025 that Robert Downey Jr. will return, not as Iron Man, but as the formidable antagonist Doctor Doom.
Furthermore, a teaser trailer released earlier in December 2025 confirmed that Chris Evans will reprise his role as Steve Rogers. Evans recently made a brief, nostalgic cameo as the Human Torch in 2024's Deadpool & Wolverine. The film's bumper cast also includes Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Anthony Mackie as Falcon/Captain America, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, and Letitia Wright as Shuri.
Directors Promise an Unprecedented Scale
Directors Joe and Anthony Russo, who helmed Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, have billed this project as their most ambitious yet. In a presentation reel at the D23 fan convention in August 2025, they declared the movie "bigger than anything we have ever done."
"This movie is, to say the least, a big one for us," the Russo brothers said. "We are bringing together so many of your favourite heroes to face one of the greatest threats to the MCU."
Marvel fans now have a considerable wait before seeing this colossal showdown unfold on the big screen. Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled for release on 18 December 2026.
