Rian Johnson Frustrated as Knives Out 3 Misses Major Cinema Chain
Knives Out 3 Faces Limited Theatrical Release

Acclaimed director Rian Johnson has publicly expressed his disappointment that the third instalment of his beloved Knives Out franchise, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, will not be shown in the world's largest cinema chain.

Limited Cinema Release Sparks Director's Appeal

Taking to social media platform X, Johnson confirmed that the new whodunit will debut in Landmark and Alamo theatres across the United States on 26th November 2025. The filmmaker, 51, revealed his frustration that AMC Theatres has decided not to screen the film, significantly limiting its initial big-screen availability.

Johnson directly appealed to fans for support, sharing a link to the film's screening list and advising: "A reminder to those in the U.S. — this is the best way to find if there’s a theater near you playing Wake Up Dead Man when it opens 11/26."

Netflix Release and Theatrical Future

The streaming giant Netflix, which produces the franchise, will make the film available on its platform starting 12th December, just weeks after its theatrical debut. Johnson was quick to clarify that this doesn't necessarily mean the end of its cinema run. "And it can absolutely stay in theaters after the 12/12 Netflix drop if there’s demand — it’s up to the theaters to decide," the Poker Face creator stated.

Responding to a fan from Oklahoma City who found no local screenings, Johnson displayed his personal investment: "I’m as frustrated as you that it’s not everywhere, but new theaters will be added so keep checking," he wrote, encouraging audiences to "contact the manager of your local theater and (politely!) ask them if it’s coming."

Star-Studded Cast Returns for New Mystery

Daniel Craig reprises his role as the brilliant Detective Benoit Blanc, this time investigating the death of a monsignor. He's joined by an impressive new ensemble cast including Cailee Spaeny, Andrew Scott, Josh O'Connor, Mila Kunis, Jeremy Renner, Josh Brolin, Kerry Washington, and Glenn Close.

The Knives Out franchise began in 2019 with the original film starring Ana de Armas in her breakout role as Marta Cabrera, alongside Chris Evans, Jamie Lee Curtis, and the late Christopher Plummer. The 2022 sequel, Glass Onion, featured Kate Hudson, Janelle Monáe, and Edward Norton.

Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery represents the latest chapter in Johnson's successful murder mystery series, blending intricate plotting with sharp social commentary and A-list talent.
