Screen legend Sir Michael Caine was met with a rousing standing ovation as he collected a prestigious lifetime achievement award, celebrating his remarkable seven-decade career. The emotional presentation took place on the opening night of the Red Sea International Film Festival in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Thursday.
A Family Affair for a Screen Icon
The 92-year-old actor was surrounded by his family as he stepped into the spotlight. His longtime friend, Hollywood star Vin Diesel, had the honour of presenting the award. Sir Michael was flanked by his three grandchildren—Taylor, Miles, and Allegra—while his wife of over 50 years, Shakira, and his two daughters looked on proudly from the audience.
He was bestowed with the Red Sea Honoree Award, which recognises actors and influential industry figures whose work has left an indelible mark on global cinema. The two-time Oscar winner's illustrious career spans classics from The Italian Job and Get Carter to Hannah and Her Sisters and Educating Rita. For a newer generation, he is beloved as Alfred Pennyworth in Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy and for roles in Inception, Dunkirk, and Tenet.
'I've Had All the Luck You Can Get'
Taking to the stage, a visibly moved Sir Michael reflected on his incredible journey. "I kept working until I was 90, which was two years ago, and I thought to myself I'm not going to do anything else because I've had all the luck you can get," he told the audience.
He expressed surprise and gratitude for the festival's honour. "But one of the biggest lucky things is tonight to turn up here... I thought I'd never win with anything there. And I have won something, so I'm happy, and you've surprised me," he said, adding heartfelt thanks to his family, both at home and in the film industry.
A Star-Studded Opening Night
The opening night gala, held at Cultural Square in Jeddah's historic Al-Balad district, firmly placed global cinema in the spotlight with a dedicated focus on Arab filmmakers. The festival's 2025 theme is 'For the Love of Cinema'.
Sir Michael was not the only luminary honoured. French screen icon Juliette Binoche also received an Honoree Award, and Hong Kong action director Stanley Tong was presented his award by actress Jessica Alba.
The evening doubled as the world premiere of Giant, the biographical drama about British boxing legend Prince Naseem Hamed, starring Amir El-Masry and Pierce Brosnan. After the screening, the celebrations continued with a surprise performance by singer Rita Ora that electrified the crowd.
The festival jury, including figures like Nadine Labaki, Riz Ahmed, and Sean Baker, were among the VIP guests, marking a powerful start to the cinematic event.
