Paul Mescal to Vanish from Spotlight Until 2028 for Beatles Biopic Role
Paul Mescal hints at break until 2028 Beatles films

Acclaimed actor Paul Mescal has indicated he might retreat from the public eye for several years as he immerses himself in one of the most significant roles of his career: portraying Sir Paul McCartney in a landmark series of Beatles films.

The Fab Four Come to Life on Screen

Sony Pictures confirmed earlier this year that four separate biopics, one for each member of The Beatles, are scheduled for a simultaneous release in April 2028. The casting, long the subject of industry speculation, sees Mescal taking on the role of the legendary bassist and songwriter Paul McCartney.

He will be joined by an impressive ensemble of rising British and Irish talent: Harris Dickinson is set to play John Lennon, Barry Keoghan will star as Ringo Starr, and Joseph Quinn will portray George Harrison. The project, officially titled 'The Beatles: A Four-Film Cinematic Event', marks the first time the surviving members and the estates of Lennon and Harrison have granted their life story rights for a feature film.

Mescal's Planned Retreat from the Spotlight

Despite landing this career-defining part, the 'Gladiator II' star has openly discussed taking a step back. In a recent interview with The Guardian, conducted while promoting his indie film 'The History of Sound', Mescal suggested a hiatus is on the horizon.

"People will get a break from me and I’ll get a break from them, over the next couple of years," the 29-year-old actor stated. He elaborated on the intense demands of his work, noting that smaller, personal projects like 'The History of Sound'—where he stars alongside Josh O'Connor—"take more out of the well" than many realise.

Mescal reflected, "I’m five or six years into this now, and I feel very lucky. But I’m also learning that I don’t think I can go on doing it as much." His planned break, however, will be far from idle. He will be deeply occupied with the monumental task of embodying McCartney and also has Richard Linklater's long-term musical project 'Merrily We Roll Along' in the pipeline.

Filming Details and Iconic Locations Confirmed

New production details have emerged, confirming that the biopics will film at the band's legendary spiritual home, Abbey Road Studios in London. Contrary to earlier reports, Westminster Council has clarified that it is working closely with the production team to facilitate filming, which will include temporarily closing the world-famous zebra crossing for shoots.

Director Sam Mendes is keen to recreate iconic moments, including the Beatles' seminal 1969 album cover. Production is understood to have commenced in November of last year.

The cast for the pivotal women in the Beatles' story has also been announced. Saoirse Ronan will play Linda McCartney, Aimee Lou Wood is cast as Pattie Boyd, Anna Sawai will portray Yoko Ono, and Mia McKenna-Bruce takes on the role of Maureen Cox. Mendes praised the actresses as "four fascinating and unique figures in their own right."

Each film will adopt the perspective of a single band member, tracing their journey from obscurity in Liverpool to global superstardom and their eventual breakup in 1970. For Paul Mescal, the journey to 2028 will be one of intense preparation and a deliberate step away from the glare of fame.
