Sturgeon, Beano at Dundee Book Festival 2026

The Dundee Book Festival is returning for its second year with a stellar lineup featuring former First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, crime specialist Professor Sue Black, and the iconic comic Beano. The festival, described by organizers as "a celebration of writers and reading," will take place from June 19 to 21 across various venues in the city.

High-Profile Speakers and Authors

Nicola Sturgeon will appear in conversation about her bestselling memoir Frankly, offering reflections on leadership, public service, and her personal political journey. Professor Sue Black, a renowned forensic anthropologist, will discuss her book An Expert Witness: Forensic Science on Trial, drawing on over four decades of experience in criminal investigation and the justice system.

The festival also features prominent Scottish authors. Graeme Macrae Burnet will talk about his latest novel Benbecula, while Jenni Fagan presents The Delusions. Broadcaster and writer Sally Magnusson will discuss The Shapeshifter's Daughter, and Graeme Armstrong will speak about his book Ravenheart.

Family-Friendly Events and Partnerships

For families, the Beano directors of mischief and mayhem, Mike Sterling and Craig Graham, will host an interactive session where children can help create a comic strip, gaining insight into the publication's creative process.

A new partnership with London's Southbank Centre brings A Poet in Every Port to Dundee, featuring the Mobile National Poetry Library offering free activities, readings, and workshops for all ages. MasterChef finalist and local chef Sarah Rankin will host an event at the McManus Galleries, which organizers promise will be "a truly memorable highlight."

Organizer Comments

Anna Day, head of libraries and culture at Leisure & Culture Dundee, said: "We've built on the success of our first year by bringing together recognised names and local voices in a programme that remains affordable and accessible. We've listened to audience feedback and expanded events for families. Our partnership with Southbank Centre, as part of their 75th anniversary, brings A Poet in Every Port to Dundee and opens up poetry to wider audiences. The festival is a celebration of writers and reading and a chance for visitors and Dundonians alike to celebrate our city."
