Film-maker Juri Rechinsky delivers a poignant and powerful message from the Ukrainian frontline in his latest documentary, Dear Beautiful Beloved. This film documents the harrowing yet tender moments of kindness and compassion amidst the overwhelming death and grief that pervades the war-torn region.
Evacuation Efforts and Human Resilience
The documentary opens with the evacuation of elderly residents from their homes to a processing centre located in a former hospital. Volunteers, including an Englishwoman named Elizabeth, display remarkable gentleness and patience as they assist these individuals. In one touching scene, a woman frets about her messy hair before leaving her flat, highlighting the small human concerns that persist even in crisis. Rechinsky also captures women and children boarding trains out of Ukraine, with babies bundled into warm onesies and families tugging along wheelie cases, underscoring the mass displacement caused by the conflict.
Forensics and the Recovery of Fallen Soldiers
The second focus of the film is on the forensics teams and military personnel who work tirelessly to recover and identify the remains of soldiers killed in battle. A key figure is Oleksandr, nicknamed "Bulldozer," who drives a white Transit van adorned with angel wings painted on the side. He undertakes the difficult and risky job of transporting bodies back to their families across the country. In a deeply saddening moment, as the van passes through a town, people line the streets kneeling on the kerb to honour the dead, showcasing the communal grief and respect for those lost.

Despite being haunted by death, Dear Beautiful Beloved is a tender and moving film that emphasises how acts of compassion, love, and resilience can serve as defiance against the horrors of war. It portrays the emotional toll on families, such as a mother overwhelmed by grief as she strokes the face of her son in a coffin, yet also highlights the unwavering spirit of volunteers and communities.
