Love them or hate them, Capri pants are not going anywhere. Claudia Winkleman demonstrated how to style the cropped trousers for a formal occasion at the BAFTAs last night, pairing them with a blazer and white heels in a characteristic all-black ensemble.
The Rise of Capri Pants
Once known as “pedal pushers,” Capri pants were originally worn by cyclists to prevent their trousers from getting caught in bike chains. German fashion designer Sonja de Lennart redesigned them as a fitted three-quarter-length trouser with a short slit on the outer side of the leg, inspired by the Italian island of Capri. Marilyn Monroe and Brigitte Bardot helped cement the style as a staple through the decades, with revivals in the 1990s and early 2000s. Now, they have made a comeback, though opinions remain divided.
