ITV co-commentator Andros Townsend apologised live on air after making a joke about MK Dons during World Cup coverage, stating that "complaints are coming." The former England international, now playing in Thailand, was providing commentary for the round-of-16 match between Switzerland and Colombia when the topic of sports franchises arose.
Commentary Incident
Townsend, 34, corrected ITV colleague Seb Hutchinson for describing American sports teams as "franchises" and "not clubs." Hutchinson noted that "we don't have franchises in football," which is technically accurate. However, Townsend quipped about a possible exception: "There might be one... Milton Keynes." Hutchinson swiftly replied he'd "stay out of that one," before Townsend added: "The complaints are coming again. Sorry, sorry."
MK Dons Controversy
The history of MK Dons remains contentious. The club, formerly known as Wimbledon FC, controversially relocated from south-west London to Milton Keynes in 2003, moving 56 miles and leaving many fans feeling abandoned. Townsend featured in only nine matches while on loan at Stadium MK from Tottenham in 2010, scoring two goals and providing two assists. His remark could be seen as an unnecessary dig, but he was quick to apologise upon realising it might cause offence.
Match Outcome
At BC Place, Townsend watched as Switzerland edged out Colombia on penalties after a 0-0 draw over 120 minutes, the only goalless knockout stage match so far. Switzerland will face Argentina in the quarter-finals on Saturday. Lionel Messi led Argentina to a 3-2 comeback win over Egypt.
Townsend's Role
Townsend, who earned 13 caps for England, has been working alongside Hutchinson throughout the tournament. He will be cheering on his former side England as they face Norway on Saturday; a win would see Thomas Tuchel's men reach the semi-finals for the second time in three tournaments.
