Jane McDonald has received a wave of support from fans after being targeted by online trolls who criticised a recent performance as 'cringe'. The singer, who rose to fame on the BBC docusoap The Cruise in the late 1990s, has remained a beloved figure in British entertainment, known for her warm personality and powerful vocals.
The backlash followed a video shared on Instagram by BBC Radio 2, showing McDonald performing a rendition of 'Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas'. While many fans praised the performance, some commenters were less kind, with one writing: 'This was on my feed this morning and almost ruined my day.' Another added: 'Beautiful voice but the videos are always so cringe.'
Fans quickly came to McDonald's defence. One supporter wrote: 'Jane's in her sixties, I doubt she cares if anyone thinks she's "cringe" (nor should anyone, it's such an odd thing to say).' Another declared: 'Err I think you mean ICONIC.' Others called her a 'national treasure'.
McDonald, who has released chart-topping albums and spent a decade on ITV's Loose Women, is set to release a new album next year and embark on a UK tour titled 'Living The Dream'. She will also host a two-hour Christmas show on BBC Radio 2.
