Pop icon and reality TV veteran Jessica Simpson has publicly brushed off speculation that she might be the next star of ABC's long-running dating show, The Bachelorette. The singer and fashion mogul made her feelings clear during a brief encounter with press on Monday.
A Firm 'No' to Reality TV Romance
When approached by TMZ and asked if she would consider leading a season of the famous dating competition, the 45-year-old Texan offered a succinct and telling reply: 'I have options, I'm good.' The question comes precisely one year after she filed for divorce from her second husband, retired NFL player Eric Johnson, following a decade of marriage.
The reporter attempted to entice her by highlighting the 'huge ratings' her participation would undoubtedly generate. Simpson, however, was unmoved, scoffing at the suggestion with a blunt: 'I don't care about that.'
A Reality TV Veteran with a Cautious Eye
Fans will remember that Simpson first rose to fame in the early 2000s through her quirky and endearing portrayal on the MTV reality series Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica, which documented her marriage to first husband Nick Lachey from 2003 to 2005. Her experience with the genre perhaps informs her current stance.
The track record for lasting love in the Bachelor franchise is notoriously poor, which may be another factor in her dismissal. Out of 21 seasons of The Bachelorette, only four winning couples remain together. The most successful is the original Bachelorette, Trista Rehn, who is still married to Ryan Sutter after 22 years and two children. By comparison, The Bachelor has produced only three lasting couples over 28 seasons.
Focus Remains on Family and the Future
Simpson and Johnson, 46, have been living separately since their split, with both prioritising their three children: 13-year-old daughter Maxwell, 12-year-old son Ace, and six-year-old daughter Birdie. The former couple recently put their $11.5 million Hidden Hills marital mansion on the market for $17.9 million.
In a curious twist, Simpson's father, Joe Simpson, recently hinted that a reconciliation might not be off the table. Speaking to TMZ on December 11, he stated the estranged pair 'are getting along wonderful' and teased, 'You never know what the future holds!' He explained they are focused on co-parenting, saying, 'They are raising children. That's the most important thing.'
For now, Simpson appears content to steer her own course. The upcoming seasons of the franchise will be led by others; day trader Grant Ellis heads The Bachelor Season 29 in January, while Taylor Frankie Paul will star in The Bachelorette Season 22, premiering in March.
