ITV's The Masked Singer delivered another weekend of spectacular surprises, leaving viewers in a state of shock with two major celebrity reveals. The hit Saturday night show saw punk icon John Lydon unveiled as the performer inside the Yak costume, while the previous evening, comedian Matt Lucas was revealed as Emperor Penguin.
Shock Elimination for Punk Legend
During Saturday's episode, Yak found himself in the dreaded sing-off against Monkey Business after failing to secure enough votes from the studio audience. The panel, consisting of Jonathan Ross, Davina McCall, Maya Jama, and Mo Gilligan, ultimately decided to eliminate Yak from the competition. The unmasking revealed the former Sex Pistols frontman, John Lydon, a revelation that left many fans stunned.
This followed another surprising unmasking from the night before. On Sunday's show, the elaborate Emperor Penguin costume was removed to reveal beloved comedian and actor Matt Lucas. The 51-year-old had first impressed with a vocal performance alongside a live band before taking a seat on the panel as a guest judge.
A Night of Double Revelations
The weekend featured a double unmasking, as rapper Professor Green was also voted out. After landing in the bottom two alongside Yak, the character Teabag was eliminated by the judges, who had incorrectly guessed the celebrity might be Mike Tindall or Judge Rinder. The 42-year-old rapper, real name Stephen Manderson, confessed he was "petrified" to sing on the show.
Viewers took to social media platform X to express their amazement at Matt Lucas's hidden talent. Many praised his "amazing voice," with one user writing, "I'm shocked Matt Lucas was Emperor Penguin. I didn't even think of him. He's got some good pipes on him." Others referenced his stage career, noting his regular performances in Les Misérables.
After his reveal, Lucas joked about his costume choice, stating, "I like a chocolate biscuit." He also commented on the judging panel's guesses, quipping, "I thought the guesses were pretty poor." The comedian is well-known in musical theatre circles, notably for playing Monsieur Thénardier in Les Misérables and for his viral charity song Thank You Baked Potato during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Series Seven Continues to Surprise
The seventh series of the ITV show has introduced a brand new line-up of celebrities concealed within extravagant costumes, all attempting to keep their identities under wraps. The opening episode also featured a major twist when pop star Anne-Marie was unveiled as Goldfish, marking the first time a contestant performed as part of a live band, named No Trout.
These reveals follow the unmasking of The One Show's Alex Jones as Disc Jockey on the previous Saturday night. Jones expressed her relief after removing her mask, dedicating the experience to her children.
The show continues to be a ratings winner for ITV, blending mystery, music, and memorable moments. The Masked Singer airs on ITV1 and is available to stream on ITVX.
