BBC One's phenomenally successful reality series, The Traitors, is back for a gripping 2026 season, once again hosted by Claudia Winkleman. The show, which has become a staple of January television, pits contestants against each other in a high-stakes game of deception, where Faithfuls must uncover the hidden Traitors among them to win a potential cash prize.
This latest instalment arrives hot on the heels of the UK's first celebrity edition, which saw comedian Alan Carr triumph as a Traitor. The new series, which began airing on Friday 16 January 2026, introduces a fresh batch of 22 ordinary Britons, each with their own unique strategies and motivations for winning.
The Traitors and Their Strategies
The secret Traitors selected at the start of the game include some formidable personalities. Rachel, a 42-year-old head of communications from County Down, is nicknamed 'Monica from Friends' for her competitive drive. She has prepared by taking online classes from an ex-FBI agent to learn how to spot micro-expressions.
Another Traitor is Stephen, a 32-year-old cyber security consultant from London. He believes his background in linguistics will help him detect when others are lying. Fiona, a 62-year-old local government officer from Swansea, and Hugo, a 51-year-old barrister from Cardiff, were also initially chosen as Traitors but have since been banished from the game.
Faithfuls and Their Game Plans
The cast of Faithfuls is diverse, with many employing clever tactics. Ellie, a 33-year-old psychologist, is the first of her profession on the show and is secretly using her skills to analyse others while hiding her true job.
Harriet, a 52-year-old bestselling crime writer and former barrister from London, hoped to use her knowledge of plotting for the game. However, she has already been banished. Other banished contestants include retired police detective Amanda, 57, from Brighton; sales exec Ross, 37, from London; and child liaison officer Judy, 60, from Doncaster.
The game has also seen several players 'murdered' by the Traitors, removing them from the castle. These include Adam (34, builder, Essex), Reece (27, sweet shop assistant, Sheffield), Maz (59, civil servant, Preston), Ben (66, retired from Hampshire), and Netty (42, nursery teacher, Glasgow).
Motivations and Prize Money Dreams
Each contestant has heartfelt reasons for competing. Many, like personal trainer Jack (29, Essex) and PhD student Jade (25, West Midlands), dream of using the prize money to get on the property ladder. Others have charitable aims: Harriet wanted to donate to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, while Hugo planned to support Amnesty International.
Family is a strong motivator. Account manager Sam (34, North Yorkshire) wanted funds to start a family, while recruiter Roxy (32, Amsterdam) aimed to begin one with her boyfriend. Unbeknownst to others, Roxy is the daughter of fellow contestant Judy, adding a hidden layer of drama to the game.
With betrayals, banishments, and murders already shaping the game, the remaining contestants must navigate a web of lies and alliances. As Claudia Winkleman guides viewers through the tense Round Table discussions and dramatic missions, the ultimate question remains: who will master the game of trust and treachery and walk away with the prize fund?
