An iconic host from one of the BBC's biggest reality shows has been praised for her genuine nature by a former contestant, who says a single question revealed her true character.
The Traitor's Tale: Paul Gorton's Experience
Paul Gorton, remembered by millions as the cunning Traitor from the 2024 series of The Traitors, has opened up about what host Claudia Winkleman is really like when the cameras stop rolling. Gorton, who managed to eliminate a fan favourite and initially pass as a trusted Faithful before his dramatic banishment, says the presenter's on-screen wit is just the beginning.
Speaking to Heat magazine, the 37-year-old revealed that Claudia's theatrical persona is deeply rooted in her real personality. "She's a full-on stand-up comedian," Gorton stated. "Like, she is the funniest, driest person and an extraordinary woman." He expressed delight at her upcoming career move, adding, "I'm so glad that she is getting her own chat show off the back of it - I still think there's so much more that people haven't seen from her."
A Host Who Cares: The Personal Touch
While Winkleman's career continues to soar, with a new BBC chat show produced by the team behind The Graham Norton Show launching this spring, Paul says she maintains a connection with former players. He receives the "odd message every now and again" and notices her engaging with contestants on social media.
However, he claims Claudia truly showed her authentic self during an unexpected encounter at the Royal Albert Hall last year. "Claudia came over and said, 'How are your kids? I love them,'" Gorton recalled. "And you think, 'Oh you're invested in me. You're not just a host and then you disappear.'" This moment of personal recognition, he suggests, proved her interest in contestants extends far beyond the game.
From Scottish Castle to National Obsession
Now in its fourth year, The Traitors continues to captivate audiences with Faithfuls and Traitors battling for a £120,000 prize pot. The show, presented by the former Strictly Come Dancing host since its 2022 launch, airs tonight (January 14) at 8pm on BBC One.
Despite the show's massive success, pulling in millions of viewers per episode, Claudia herself has admitted she never anticipated its impact. Speaking to Grazia, the 53-year-old said, "We didn't foresee this. We went to Scotland with the amazing people who make it and a pair of red fingerless gloves and gave it our best shot." She attributes the appeal to the extraordinary psychology of watching people detect deception, calling the dynamics "addictive" and confessing she is now "completely obsessed."
Paul Gorton's revelations paint a picture of a host whose sharp humour and deadpan commentary are matched by a surprising and sincere off-screen warmth, solidifying her status as a beloved figure in British entertainment.
