Sharp-eyed fans of the hit BBC reality show The Traitors are convinced they witnessed a major blunder from one of the secret saboteurs during Friday's tense episode.
The Challenge That Sparked Suspicion
In the episode broadcast on 16 January 2026, the remaining players were locked inside giant boxes for a psychological challenge. Their task was to answer questions about the Traitors' motives, but the actual Traitors – Rachel and Stephen – had to secretly confer before writing down their answers, all while maintaining their cover as Faithfuls.
The crucial moment came when they were asked which player was most "valuable" to the Traitors. Posing as a loyal Faithful, Rachel guessed that the Traitors would pick Matthew. She justified her choice by referencing a challenge earlier in the week involving a confessional box, where Matthew had privately offered to join the Traitors if they murdered fellow Faithful Jessie.
Why Viewers Think Rachel Slipped Up
When host Claudia Winkleman pressed her for reasoning, Rachel stated, "I think it's the confessional box, and I kind of think that might have helped them more than it helped us." This comment immediately set off alarm bells for the audience.
On social media platform X, one viewer pointed out the potential flaw: "Surely Matthew, Rachel [picking] you and talking about your confessional... Surely you would realise that you asked in your confessional to be a Traitor…" Another described the moment as "such a big slip up," while a third called it a "HUGE mistake."
The issue is that Rachel's answer inadvertently shone a spotlight on Matthew's private deal, an interaction that had, until then, been largely overlooked by the other players in the castle. It was, however, a moment that had secretly worried the Traitors themselves.
The Fallout and Future of the Game
This potential mistake could have significant consequences. The only other person to use the confessional box was Harriet, who later caused a breakfast table meltdown with the information she gained – an act for which she apologised before being banished later that same day. Matthew's own pivotal interaction had seemingly been forgotten, but Rachel may have just revived it.
The episode, which also saw one Faithful murdered and another banished, has left the game on a knife-edge. The Traitors continues next Wednesday at 8pm on BBC One, where the repercussions of this slip-up may fully unfold.
