Suddenly Amish UK: Where to Watch New Reality Show on Discovery+
Watch Suddenly Amish in the UK on Discovery+

A groundbreaking new reality television series is challenging a group of six individuals to leave their modern lives behind and embrace the strict, traditional world of the Amish. Suddenly Amish premiered its first episode earlier this week, offering a fascinating reverse perspective on the popular Breaking Amish format.

Where and When Can UK Viewers Watch?

For audiences in the United Kingdom eager to follow this unique social experiment, the wait is almost over. The show will become available for streaming on Discovery+ from January 18. While the TLC channel has recently launched in the UK, it is not yet confirmed if Suddenly Amish will broadcast linearly on the channel in the future.

In the United States, new episodes are released every Tuesday. Although only three episodes have been listed online so far, it is anticipated that UK viewers will also receive episodes on a weekly basis following the initial release.

The Premise: Outsiders Looking In

This series flips the script on its predecessor. Instead of following Amish youth exploring the outside world, Suddenly Amish documents six non-Amish participants, referred to as "English," as they are granted rare access to immerse themselves in an Old Order Amish community in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

They must abandon contemporary comforts, including technology, electricity, and often indoor plumbing, to adopt a life governed by faith, discipline, and simplicity. The show explores their personal motivations for seeking such a drastic change and the immense cultural challenges they face.

Meet the Participants

The six outsiders come from diverse backgrounds, each with their own reasons for embarking on this journey:

  • Kendra Bates (33, California): A former dancer and content creator who hopes to find a more meaningful path and overcome body image struggles.
  • Judah (22, Missouri): A rapper with a taste for luxury, secretly yearning for true belonging but fearful of germs and the less-than-pristine farm life.
  • Matt (34, Texas): A recently divorced father seeking spiritual rejuvenation and a fresh start built on solid family values.
  • Aaron (40, Michigan): The son of a pastor who wants to see if his principles align with the Amish, but relies on modern hearing aids, which he may have to surrender.
  • Esmerelda (25, Texas): Craves the stable family life she never had, yet her identity is deeply tied to wearing makeup—a practice forbidden in the community.
  • Billie Jo (44, New York): A long-time admirer of Amish culture who already wears traditional dress as a barista, now getting the chance to live her dream.

Authenticity and Filming Location

Reported to be as authentic as reality TV gets, the show films in the heart of one of America's oldest Amish settlements: Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The participants are guided by their Amish hosts, including the stern Bishop Vernon, who is committed to growing his community through somewhat unconventional methods.

The series promises romantic twists, cultural clashes, and emotional revelations as each participant grapples with the ultimate question: is the Amish way of life their true calling?

UK viewers can start streaming all the drama and decision-making on Discovery+ from January 18.
