Composer Erland Cooper's Verdict on Kate and Charlotte's Heartwarming Piano Duet
Composer's Verdict on Kate and Charlotte's Piano Duet

The composer behind the music performed by the Princess of Wales and her daughter has shared his heartfelt review of their surprise piano duet, praising their talent and the poignant meaning behind the piece.

A Royal Surprise at Windsor Castle

Scottish composer Erland Cooper experienced a "big surprise" when he was invited to Windsor Castle just last week. There, he heard his composition, 'Holm Sound', performed by Princess Kate and her ten-year-old daughter, Princess Charlotte. The performance was recorded for Kate's annual Together at Christmas carol service, which was held at Westminster Abbey in early December and broadcast on Christmas Eve.

Cooper revealed he had spoken with the Princess earlier in the year and knew she enjoyed playing the piece with family. However, hearing it played by the royal duo was an unexpected honour. "I didn't need to give any direction, they were so good," he told BBC Breakfast, describing the experience as nerve-wracking for any performer.

Confidence and a Poignant Connection

The composer went on to describe young Charlotte as "very confident" and noted she played the piece "really well" and "so beautifully." He explained that the royal pair played the piece several times and even asked him to have a go himself, after which he offered a few pointers. "But I didn't need to. I think I was there as a cheerleader," Cooper added.

The performance held extra significance because the music was originally written for Cooper's mother, who is also named Charlotte. He described the piece as being about motherhood and the full-circle moment of seeing one's parents in their children's eyes. "This is a wonderful coincidence," he said, highlighting the emotional depth the Princesses brought to their rendition.

A Christmas Tradition of Community and Care

The Together at Christmas concert, now in its fifth year, has become a staple in the royal calendar, honouring hundreds of community heroes. As footage of the piano duet aired, Princess Kate read a personal letter she penned for guests, speaking of Christmas being about "love taking form in the simplest, most human ways."

This marked the second time Kate has showcased her piano skills during the festive programme, having previously accompanied singer Tom Walker in 2021. The inclusion of Princess Charlotte delighted royal fans, with many taking to social media to express joy at the young royal's musical talents.

The event successfully blended a celebration of community spirit with a touching, intimate family moment, creating a heartwarming highlight of the royal Christmas festivities.
