King Charles Attends London Fashion Week Hours After Brother's Arrest
King Charles upheld his commitment to duty and service by attending the opening show of London Fashion Week, just hours after the arrest of his brother, Prince Andrew. The monarch's appearance at the event in central London was not pre-announced, leading to audible gasps and cheers from the public as he arrived in a state limousine.
A Display of Composure Amid Crisis
The King appeared relaxed and at ease, joking and laughing with designer Stella McCartney as she showcased sustainable fashion products. McCartney, who has known Charles for years, greeted him with a kiss and exchanged light-hearted banter about her father, former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney. "He's great, he's great. You guys need to hang out," she quipped after Charles inquired about him.
Earlier in the day, the King issued a statement asserting that "the law must take its course" and reaffirming the royal family's dedication to duty and service. His efforts to steer the monarchy through the crisis stemming from Prince Andrew's friendship with convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein are being bolstered by the Prince and Princess of Wales, William and Kate.
Sustainable Fashion and Royal Support
McCartney was exhibiting sustainable British innovation, and the King showed particular interest in a plant-based feather used to decorate a dress. He presented the designer with a scarf, and they posed together for media photographs, with McCartney orchestrating the scene: "Let's do a nice photo. Ready, OK, come on, cheesy smile." After adjusting the scarf, she added, "OK, I'll do this, let me organise this, here you go, your majesty – ready, pull it."
McCartney was announced as an ambassador for the King's Sustainable Markets Initiative, founded in 2020 when he was Prince of Wales to promote global sustainability. "Hey, I'll take ambassador any day of the week, it feels great," she said. "I feel very proud to be the first ambassador of fashion for them and I'm very excited to do great things with the honour." When asked if she was happy to see the King despite ongoing events, she replied, "good try."
Polling Reveals Royal Reputation Under Strain
Despite the show of unity, the royal family's reputation appears to be suffering. A new Ipsos poll of 1,086 adults conducted from February 13 to 16 found that favourability ratings for all members have declined since November:
- Prince William's rating fell eight points to 63%.
- Princess Kate dropped seven points to 62%.
- Princess Anne was down nine points at 53%.
- King Charles's rating decreased five points to 48%.
- Prince Andrew's stood at just 5%, down four points.
Contrasting Scenes: Fashion and Interrogation
As the King took his front-row seat for the show by British-Nigerian designer Tolu Coker, models in stylish black mini dresses and elegant outfits strutted past to live music. Charles chatted amiably with McCartney beside him, presenting a stark contrast to his brother Andrew, who spent the day being questioned by officers on suspicion of misconduct in public office.
During the event, a member of the press twice shouted, "What's your reaction to your brother's arrest?" but the King walked into the building without responding. His departure was similarly marked by an unanswered question from the press, underscoring the delicate balance he must maintain between public engagement and private turmoil.
This appearance at London Fashion Week highlights King Charles's commitment to his royal duties and sustainability causes, even as he navigates one of the most challenging periods for the monarchy in recent years.
