King Charles Presides Over Significant Royal Gathering at St James's Palace
His Majesty King Charles III today led the most substantial assembly of senior royals since the arrest of his brother, Prince Andrew. The monarch was accompanied by Queen Camilla, Princess Anne, and cousins the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester at St James's Palace in London, where he presented prestigious awards for educational excellence.
Royal Presence Amid Family Controversy
The gathering marked a notable show of royal unity following Prince Andrew's arrest last week by police investigating allegations of misconduct in public office. The investigation centers on claims that Andrew passed official and classified documents to his friend, convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein, during his tenure as a UK special trade envoy.
Prince Edward had been scheduled to attend but withdrew due to illness. This meant three of the late Queen's four children were present, with Andrew being the notable absentee. Andrew has not performed royal duties since being stripped of his responsibilities by his mother in November 2019 following his controversial Newsnight interview.
Following his brother's arrest, King Charles expressed his "deepest concern" at events and offered his full support and cooperation to police. He pledged that "my family and I will continue in our duty and service to you all."
Celebrating Educational Excellence
The ceremony saw King Charles present the Queen Elizabeth Prizes for Higher and Further Education, recognizing outstanding work at UK universities and colleges. Nineteen institutions received awards for innovation and excellence across diverse subject areas.
Princess Anne attended in her capacity as chancellor of the University of Edinburgh, which received an award for research and education by its Centre for Fire Safety Engineering.
Following the presentations, Their Majesties and Their Royal Highnesses met recipients at a reception to learn more about their award-winning work.
Prestigious Awards with National Significance
The Queen Elizabeth Prizes for Higher and Further Education form part of the UK national honours system, representing the highest level of state recognition for outstanding work in universities and colleges. First awarded by the late Queen in 1995 and now in their 16th round, the prizes are granted every two years on the Prime Minister's advice following a rigorous review process managed by the Royal Anniversary Trust, an independent charity.
