King Charles Reportedly Set to Snub Prince Harry During Historic US Visit
King Charles is poised to travel to the United States in April to celebrate the country's 250th anniversary, but sources indicate he will not make a trip to California to see his son Prince Harry and grandchildren Archie and Lilibet. The monarch and Queen Camilla are expected to spend just three days on the East Coast, with a tightly packed itinerary focused on official engagements in Washington, New York, and an unconfirmed third location.
Strained Relations and Hectic Schedule Cited as Reasons
According to reports from The Times, the visit is unlikely to include a flight to the West Coast due to the ongoing estrangement between King Charles and Prince Harry, which has persisted for years. Former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond explained that state visits are meticulously planned months in advance, with little downtime for personal matters.
"State visits are incredibly busy," Bond told the Mirror. "The schedule is worked out months in advance and is tightly packed with carefully curated engagements designed to enhance bilateral relations. There is very little downtime, and I can’t think that the King would fly across the whole country to visit Harry and his family in California."
Limited Opportunities for Family Reunion
Despite the busy agenda, Bond believes King Charles would be eager to see his grandchildren, as he has only met Lilibet once and Archie a handful of times. However, she noted that a meeting during the official trip could distract from its diplomatic purpose.
"I’m sure Charles would love to meet his grandchildren again, and so I suppose it’s conceivable that the Sussexes could take a flight to New York, or wherever the King and Queen are based, for a brief reunion," Bond said. "But visits like this are about as official as it can get, and it’s really not a time for patching up severely strained family relationships. A meeting would also inevitably draw the headlines away from the purpose of the visit."
She concluded that it is "an extremely long shot" for a reunion to occur, suggesting that Harry and his family might be encouraged to maintain a low profile during the trip.
Details of the Upcoming Visit
The King's trip, which has yet to be confirmed by Buckingham Palace, is intended to mark the 250-year anniversary of the United States' founding. It is described as a "major moment" leading up to the July 4 Independence Day celebrations. Notably, this visit will be half the length of the late Queen Elizabeth's bicentenary trip in 1976.
Rumors of the state visit emerged months after King Charles hosted US President Donald Trump and the First Lady in the UK in September last year. Trump, who had previously been hosted by Queen Elizabeth in 2019, described the second state visit as the "highest honour" of his life during a state banquet at Windsor Castle.
As preparations continue, the focus remains on the diplomatic significance of the visit, with family reunions taking a backseat to official duties.
