King Charles has issued an extraordinary statement confirming the Royal Family will fully support police investigations after Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office. The former Duke of York was taken into custody by Thames Valley Police officers at his Sandringham estate property on February 19, which coincidentally marked his 66th birthday.
Police Investigation Details Remain Limited
Thames Valley Assistant Chief Constable Oliver Wright confirmed the service has opened an investigation into an "allegation of misconduct in public office" but provided few additional details. He emphasized the need to protect the investigation's integrity while acknowledging significant public interest in the case.
"Following a thorough assessment, we have now opened an investigation into this allegation of misconduct in public office," Wright stated. "It is important that we protect the integrity and objectivity of our investigation as we work with our partners to investigate this alleged offence."
Norfolk Constabulary revealed they are assisting Thames Valley Police with the investigation, though specific allegations, evidence triggering the arrest, Andrew's current location, and whether he has been interviewed under caution all remain unconfirmed.
King Charles's Firm Response
King Charles III, who previously stripped Andrew of official titles in 2025 and his Royal Lodge residence this year, said he learned of the allegations "with the deepest concern." In a no-nonsense statement, the monarch vowed the law would "take its course" with his brother while promising full cooperation.
"I have learned with the deepest concern the news about Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and suspicion of misconduct in public office," the King stated. "What now follows is the full, fair and proper process by which this issue is investigated in the appropriate manner and by the appropriate authorities. In this, as I have said before, they have our full and wholehearted support and co-operation."
The King added: "Let me state clearly: the law must take its course." He confirmed the Royal Family would continue their duties during the investigation while refraining from further comment to avoid compromising the process.
