Melania Trump has officially donated her distinctive white and black-trimmed inaugural ball gown to the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History. The former First Lady described the experience as "incredible" upon seeing the gown displayed within the museum's prestigious First Ladies Collection.
A Historic Tradition Continues
On Friday, February 20, 2026, Melania Trump participated in the long-standing tradition of first ladies donating their inaugural gowns to the Smithsonian. This marks the second such donation from Trump, following her previous contribution of the gown she wore to the 2017 inaugural balls.
The Signature Ensemble
The donated ensemble features a strapless white sheath dress with striking black trim, accompanied by a black neckpiece adorned with a reproduction of a Harry Winston diamond brooch. Trump wore this sophisticated outfit during the inaugural celebrations on January 20, 2025.
During the donation ceremony, the gown was displayed on a mannequin on stage before being transported upstairs to join the permanent exhibition. The first ladies' exhibit now showcases more than two dozen historic gowns from various administrations.
More Than Just a Dress
In her remarks about the donation, Melania Trump emphasized that the gown represents far more than mere fabric and stitching. "This is more than 50 years of education, experience, and wisdom realized with each thread, each stitch, each sharp edge," she explained.
The former fashion model elaborated on the design's personal significance, noting that "the meticulously formed black shape 'Z' on the front bodice summons decades of my early memories, life experiences, and influences." She added that "all of these stories are tucked deep within its crisp, strong seams—forever."
Fashion as Creative Expression
Trump spoke passionately about fashion design as a legitimate form of creative expression. She described how the black and white color scheme of the gown "sets a mood rich with emotion" and creates a distinctive visual statement.
"This dress speaks with a distinct point of view, a modern silhouette, bold and dignified, and ruthlessly chic," she declared during the ceremony.
Preserving History
Following the brief program, the mannequin wearing the gown was carefully moved to its permanent display location within the museum. Melania Trump visited the exhibit alongside Herve Pierre, her longtime stylist and the designer of both her inaugural gowns.
The museum reopened to the public on Friday afternoon, allowing visitors to view the latest addition to the collection. When asked by a reporter about seeing her gown on display, Trump responded with enthusiasm: "It's incredible. It's a historic moment."
The gown now resides in a see-through protective case within the National Museum of American History, where it will be preserved alongside other significant artifacts from American political and cultural history.
