Paddington Bear's Royal Return to Windsor Castle
Nearly four years after his initial visit, the beloved Paddington Bear made a triumphant return to Windsor Castle for a special appointment with Queen Camilla. The occasion was a star-studded reception celebrating young writers, where the Peruvian bear once again captured hearts with his charming presence.
In the Grand Reception Room, Paddington promised to distribute all his marmalade sandwiches to the finalists of the prestigious BBC 500 Words competition. After being introduced to the Queen by broadcaster Alex Jones, the bear performed a respectful curtsy before Her Majesty, who warmly thanked him for traveling 'all the way' to attend.
A Royal Conversation and Musical Performance
'And you’re going to give all your marmalade sandwiches to all these children, and perhaps I can have one too, thank you very much,' Queen Camilla told the iconic bear. On an unseasonably warm February day, the 78-year-old monarch noted to the jacket-clad Paddington: 'You must be a little hot.'
Beyond his famous sandwiches, Paddington treated guests to a special performance of The Explorer and The Bear from Paddington The Musical. This marked only his second visit to the historic castle; his previous appearance involved taking tea with the late Queen Elizabeth during her Platinum Jubilee celebrations.
Remembering a Special Bond with Queen Elizabeth
During that memorable Platinum Jubilee event, Paddington and Queen Elizabeth bonded over their shared affection for marmalade sandwiches in a heartwarming skit that opened her star-studded concert celebrating 70 years of reign. When the monarch passed away just three months later, Paddington joined grieving Britons in paying tribute, publicly thanking her 'for everything.'
A Gathering of Literary and Entertainment Stars
Paddington wasn't the only celebrity at yesterday's reception in the room traditionally reserved for investitures. He joined distinguished judges of the children's writing competition including Sir Lenny Henry, Malorie Blackman, and Rose Ayling-Ellis. Queen Camilla has supported this prestigious competition for over a decade.
The event was hosted by BBC's The One Show presenters Alex Jones and Roman Kemp. Additional celebrity readers included Jodie Whittaker, Joanna Page, Bradley and Barney Walsh, Sara Cox, rapper Big Zuu, and author Paterson Joseph, who read aloud the top six competition entries.
Celebrating Young Writing Talent
The true VIPs of the occasion were the 50 finalists selected from over 45,000 submissions from young writers across the United Kingdom. BBC 500 Words represents the UK's most prestigious writing competition for children aged five to eleven, encouraging them to craft imaginative short stories.
Last month, Queen Camilla joined the judging panel chaired by Alex Jones and Rose Ayling-Ellis to select the best entries from 46,500 submissions. Judge Frank Cottrell-Boyce described the competition as 'a highlight of my calendar,' praising how 'funny, wise, ambitious and bonkers' the children's stories consistently prove to be.
Royal Duties Continue Amid Family Challenges
During the reception, Queen Camilla set aside the ongoing crisis within the Royal Family to engage warmly with her guests, including stars from BBC's Gladiators. Livi Sheldon and Zack George (known as Diamond and Steel) attended alongside Harry Aikines-Aryeetey (Nitro) and Montell Douglas (Fire).
Like other senior royals, Camilla continues her public duties following the unprecedented arrest of disgraced Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor last week. Yesterday, she joined King Charles, Princess Anne, and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester in the largest royal gathering since Andrew's arrest.
His Majesty recently presented The Queen Elizabeth Prizes for Higher and Further Education at St James's Palace, reaffirming in a statement that 'my family and I will continue in our duty and service' following his younger brother's legal troubles.
The BBC 500 Words competition final will be televised on The One Show on March 6, coinciding with World Book Day celebrations across the nation.
