Queen Camilla and Paddington Bear Share Marmalade Sandwiches at Windsor Castle Event
Queen Camilla and Paddington Bear shared a delightful moment over marmalade sandwiches during a star-studded reception at Windsor Castle. The event celebrated the final of the BBC 500 Words national children's story writing competition, which this year attracted over 46,000 entries from young writers across the United Kingdom.
A Royal Meeting with a Beloved Character
Following the ceremony where Camilla presented medals to the young finalists, the Queen warmly greeted Paddington Bear, who was brought to life for the West End production of Paddington The Musical. Dressed in his iconic blue duffle coat and red hat, the 4ft character shook hands with the Queen, who expressed her gratitude for his attendance.
"Hello Paddington – how very nice to meet you, thank you very much for coming," Camilla told the bear. "You're very kind, you are going to give all your marmalade sandwiches to all these children. Perhaps I can have one too?"
The bear responded with an enthusiastic thumbs up to this request. Later, guests were offered marmalade sandwiches on plates cleverly arranged beneath red hats, adding a whimsical touch to the festivities.
Celebrating Children's Literacy and Creativity
The BBC 500 Words competition, which Camilla has supported for more than a decade, aims to foster literacy and creativity among children. The winners of this year's competition will be revealed during a special episode of the BBC's The One Show on 6 March.
Bradley Walsh praised the Queen's involvement, calling it "a wonderful thing," while his son Barney noted, "The creativity of the children is unbelievable." Paterson Joseph also thanked Camilla for "all you are doing for literacy," highlighting concerns about a decline in literacy rates since the Covid-19 pandemic.
A Nostalgic Tribute to Queen Elizabeth II
The event evoked memories of the late Queen Elizabeth II, who famously appeared in a comedy sketch with a digitally animated Paddington Bear to mark her Platinum Jubilee. In that sketch, she revealed that she kept marmalade sandwiches – Paddington's favourite treat – in her handbag.
When Queen Elizabeth II died in 2022, mourners left Paddington cuddly toys and marmalade sandwiches outside Buckingham Palace as a heartfelt tribute, underscoring the enduring cultural significance of the beloved bear.
Star-Studded Gathering at Windsor Castle
The reception was attended by a host of celebrities, including:
- Actress Joanna Page
- Peep Show actor Paterson Joseph
- Rapper Big Zuu
- TV presenters Bradley and Barney Walsh
- Doctor Who star Jodie Whittaker
- DJ Sara Cox, who will host a BBC 500 Words special on her Radio 2 Book Club
Judges of the competition, such as Sir Lenny Henry, writer Malorie Blackman, and actress Rose Ayling-Ellis, were also present. Camilla had previously met with Ayling-Ellis at Buckingham Palace to discuss the shortlisted stories.
In a light-hearted exchange, the Queen asked Big Zuu if he was still cooking, to which the rapper replied, "I will cook for you soon, one day." This interaction added a personal and engaging touch to the formal event.
The gathering at Windsor Castle not only celebrated the achievements of young writers but also reinforced the royal family's commitment to promoting literacy and the arts, all while creating memorable moments with iconic cultural figures like Paddington Bear.
