Count Nikolai's Acting Debut: Queen's Grandson 'Excited' for New Career
Queen's Grandson Makes Acting Debut After Title Loss

Count Nikolai of Monpezat, the 26-year-old grandson of Denmark's Queen Margrethe II, has spoken candidly about the "excitement" and intimidation of launching a brand-new career path. The royal is set to make his acting debut in a modern film adaptation of the classic 1905 Swedish novel, Doktor Glas.

From Runway to Film Set: A Royal Career Pivot

While Count Nikolai is no stranger to the spotlight, having modelled for prestigious brands like Burberry at London Fashion Week, stepping onto a film set represents a significant shift. In the movie, he will portray the half-brother of the main character, describing his role as the "weird, wild brother" who stands opposite the film's antagonist.

"I was very excited when I first read the script," he revealed in a recent interview. "Obviously, it's my first time acting, so it was quite intimidating, but overall, it's exciting." He emphasised that while he has enjoyed the project immensely, he currently views acting as a job rather than a definitive career, balancing it with his work as a consultant in the property sector.

A New Chapter Following Royal Title Changes

This professional move comes three years after a major personal change. In September 2022, Queen Margrethe II announced that, from 1 January 2023, the children of her son Prince Joachim would no longer use their prince and princess titles. Instead, they would be known as counts and countesses of Monpezat, a decision said to allow them greater freedom to shape their own lives outside the formal duties of the royal house.

At the time, Count Nikolai—then Prince Nikolai—publicly expressed being "shocked, confused and very sad" by the swift decision, which he claimed he was informed about just over a week before it became public. Despite the title change, he and his siblings retain their places in the line of succession to the Danish throne.

Respecting the Craft and Awaiting the Final Cut

Discussing his foray into cinema with Vogue Scandinavia, Count Nikolai shared his deep respect for the profession. "Stepping into acting for the first time and working closely with such strong Nordic talents has given me great respect for the profession and a lot of experience," he stated.

He explained that the project felt like a natural fit, as he has always been drawn to the magic of film. However, he is conscious of the difference between static modelling poses and dynamic acting. For now, his future in the industry remains undecided. "Before I decide anything about the future, I need to see the final result and take it all in," he admitted, indicating he will wait for the film's release in April before considering further roles.

The film Doktor Glas marks a bold new beginning for the count, as he carves out a public identity distinct from both his royal heritage and his established modelling career, embracing the challenge of a completely new artistic endeavour.
