In a remarkable tale of modern romance, a Scottish teacher has revealed how she moved more than 5,500 miles across the world for a man she had only met in person four times. Gillian Philip, now 39, met her now-husband Henry Philip, 42, during a solo Flash Pack trip to China in October 2019, a journey that would ultimately transform her life.
From Solo Travel to Lifelong Partnership
Gillian, originally from Scotland, had decided to "give up on dating" when she turned 30, opting instead to move to South Korea to teach at an international school. She focused on self-improvement, enjoying activities like walking, swimming, and travelling, and embarked on her first solo Flash Pack adventure to Vietnam and Cambodia in 2018. Flash Pack is a social adventure travel company that creates bucket-list experiences for like-minded solo travellers.
In 2019, her plans to attend the Rugby World Cup in Japan with family fell through, leading her to book a last-minute trip to China with Flash Pack. Henry, a software developer also from Scotland, had booked his spot separately, and neither expected to meet anyone romantically. The 12-day adventure included visiting the Great Wall at sunrise, exploring Beijing, making dumplings with locals, and seeing the Terracotta Warriors in Xi'an.
An Unlikely Connection Forms
Gillian recalls that their first meeting was not love at first sight. "It wasn't like, 'Oh, wow, he's amazing', it was more, 'He seems like a nice person'," she explained. However, as they spent time together shopping, chatting on train journeys, and visiting food markets, a bond developed. Henry even helped her pick out a jumper since she had only brought 6kg of hand luggage.
"I thought by fluke we just ended up sitting next to each other on every train journey, but I found out later he planned some of that," Gillian said. In Shanghai, they stayed up all night talking and shared their first kiss before flying home. Despite this, Gillian doubted they would meet again, even considering setting Henry up with a friend in Edinburgh due to the vast distance between them.
Overcoming Distance and Doubts
Living 9,000 kilometres apart with a nine-hour time difference, they maintained contact through messaging and video calls. They managed to meet up a few times in December 2019, visiting Christmas markets in Edinburgh and spending New Year together. After months apart due to Covid-19, with countless messages and an "I love you" moment over a video call, Gillian made the bold decision to quit her job and move to Scotland in July 2021.
"If any of my female friends said they're moving halfway around the world for a guy they'd met four times, I'd say, 'What are you doing?'" Gillian admitted. "Surprisingly, only two people turned around to me and said, 'I don't think that's a wise idea'... but a part of me thought, if I don't give this a go, I'll always regret it."
A Happy Ending and Family Life
After moving in together in Edinburgh, Henry proposed in May 2022, they married in July 2023, and have since welcomed their first child, who is now 17 months old. The couple continues to travel together, having visited Alaska for their honeymoon and destinations like Toronto, Vancouver, and Croatia. They now cherish spending time as a family.
Reflecting on their journey, Gillian shared: "Henry and I say to each other, if we saw each other in a bar, I don't think either of us would have had the confidence to go up to each other. Our paths were meant to cross, we just took the long way round to get there. It's the old cliche which people used to say to me and I hated them saying it, but you will find love when you least expect it."
Gillian's story serves as an inspiration to others to dream big and embrace unexpected opportunities, proving that love can blossom in the most unforeseen circumstances.
