Royal Rift Deepens: William and Kate Confront Harry and Meghan Over Staff Treatment

Behind the glittering facade of the 2018 royal wedding between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, a storm was brewing within the hallowed halls of Buckingham Palace. While the nation celebrated the union, Prince William and Princess Kate were growing increasingly alarmed by the alleged behaviour of the Sussexes, particularly their treatment of palace staff.

Tensions Rise Amid Staff Complaints

In the months leading up to the wedding, palace staff reportedly faced constant complaints from Harry and Meghan, severely impacting morale. According to royal biographer Russell Myers in his new book William and Catherine: The Intimate Inside Story, the Prince and Princess of Wales observed this deteriorating atmosphere with deep concern. They had worked hard to foster a positive working environment, but saw it unravel as staff began leaving due to stress.

A palace source revealed the stark contrast: "In one camp you had the people who cared, wanted those working in the household to enjoy themselves while working there, and on the other side it was something different every day. Nothing was ever good enough, there were constant complaints. It was exhausting."

The Queen's Hurt and William's Intervention

The situation reached a critical point when William learned about a particularly painful exchange between Harry and Queen Elizabeth II. Royal author Sally Bedell Smith reported that Lady Elizabeth Anson, a cousin and confidante of the late monarch, described how Harry had been rude to the Queen for ten minutes during a meeting about wedding arrangements. The Queen was reportedly upset that Harry wanted the Archbishop of Canterbury to officiate instead of the traditional Dean of Windsor.

Lady Elizabeth stated this confrontation left the Queen "hurt beyond belief." Upon hearing this, William reportedly remonstrated with his brother for what he deemed unforgivable behaviour and apologised to staff on Harry's behalf multiple times.

The Failed Reconciliation Attempt

In July 2018, two months after the wedding, William and Kate invited Harry and Meghan to their home in an attempt to address the staff treatment issues. However, the meeting failed to resolve tensions. The Sussexes refused to accept responsibility for the departure of two of Meghan's personal assistants or acknowledge their role in creating what insiders described as an unhappy atmosphere that left staff "sick with stress."

An insider explained: "It had reached an intolerable situation for so many of them, there were a lot of issues surrounding people needing time off work, not wanting to come in or be on engagements on duty with Harry or Meghan. Everything possible was being done at all stages to help them but nothing was ever good enough."

The Alleged Physical Confrontation

Matters escalated further in early 2019 when William arranged to meet Harry specifically to question him about Meghan's behaviour toward palace staff. This meeting allegedly resulted in the now-infamous physical altercation between the brothers, with Harry claiming in his autobiography that William pushed him into a dog bowl.

Sources close to William have disputed this account, calling Harry's version "massively overblown" and insisting that while "cross words" were exchanged, there was no physical violence. One source stated: "It was a cheap shot [from Harry] to present such an argument. Tensions were running very high and yes there certainly were cross words exchanged that on reflection were regrettable, but the prince [William] is adamant there was no physical violence."

Kate's Changing Perspective

Princess Kate, who had previously acted as a mediator in disputes between the brothers, found her patience wearing thin. Initially attributing their quarrels to immaturity, she became particularly troubled by the Sussexes' treatment of staff, whom she and William genuinely cared about.

A source familiar with both couples revealed: "They definitely thought the Sussexes' behaviour stemmed from something more than being difficult. The whole atmosphere between them was pretty toxic. Meghan was being bullish, Kate found her abrasive."

The source added that while Kate hoped William could resolve things with Harry, she ultimately recognized the inevitability of their separation, though perhaps not anticipating the complete rupture that followed. With three young children as her primary focus, Kate saw the writing on the wall for the once-close royal relationships.

Conflicting Accounts and Lasting Damage

Harry has consistently denied allegations of bullying, claiming instead that Meghan worked hard to create a positive working environment. In his memoir, he wrote: "Despite what certain people were saying about her, I never heard her speak a bad word about anybody, or to anybody. On the contrary, I watched her redouble her efforts to spread kindness."

However, William reportedly echoed tabloid descriptions of Meghan as "difficult," "rude," and "abrasive" during their confrontations. While those close to William couldn't confirm his exact words, they noted it would have been "a fair assessment" if he did use such language.

The fundamental disagreement over staff treatment created an irreparable rift between the two royal couples, transforming what began as sibling rivalry into a profound philosophical divide about how to treat those who serve the monarchy. The fallout from these tensions would eventually lead to Harry and Meghan's dramatic exit from royal duties and their relocation to North America.
