In a move signalling a proactive approach to future challenges, the Prince of Wales has expanded his communications team with a significant new hire. Prince William has brought in public relations expert Liza Ravenscroft, a specialist in crisis management, to work within his office.
A Strategic Appointment for the Future King
While Kensington Palace has indicated that Ms Ravenscroft will operate in a 'non-crisis' capacity, the strategic value of her expertise has not been lost on observers. The appointment, which emerged this week, has been interpreted as a clear sign of William's intent to modernise and fortify the monarchy's communications strategy. Royal commentator Jennie Bond told the Mirror she believes it is an "extremely shrewd move."
"The Palace says Liza Ravenscroft hasn’t been hired because of her expertise in crisis management and, whether or not that’s true, her training certainly won’t go amiss," Bond stated. She suggested the recruitment may have come on the recommendation of Julian Payne, King Charles's former communications secretary, who is currently Ravenscroft's boss at the global communications firm Edelman.
The 'Bulletproof Sunshine' Expert
Liza Ravenscroft joins the royal household from Edelman, where she led the UK Crisis & Issues team, working closely with high-profile clients during their most difficult periods. A previous boss once described her as 'bulletproof sunshine'. Her LinkedIn profile outlines her experience with "front page stuff," handling everything from boycott campaigns and serious safety issues to geopolitical risks.
Her career also includes roles at major corporations like Marriott Hotels and British Airways. She describes her professional philosophy as believing "in the power of strong relationships to defend and charm in equal measure."
Navigating a Landscape of Royal Challenges
The royal family has faced a relentless series of public relations challenges in recent years. From the ongoing rift with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to the scandal surrounding Prince Andrew, the need for expert crisis navigation is clear. With Prince Harry due in the UK imminently for further legal proceedings, tensions show little sign of easing.
Jennie Bond emphasised the forward-thinking nature of William's decision. "This could be one of the changes William intends to pursue: ensuring his team is ahead of the game, fully proactive and not allowing 'events, dear boy' to destabilise the monarchy," she said.
"There are still some difficult and testing situations on the horizon: what next for Andrew, and will Harry and Meghan be knocking on William’s door? The future King has his work cut out - and it’s now up to Liza Ravenscroft to smooth the path ahead," Bond concluded, highlighting the pivotal role the new appointee may play in the monarchy's next chapter.
