She is best known for portraying Valerie Barlow in Coronation Street from 1961 to 1971, a character that quickly became a fan favourite.

Her marriage to Ken Barlow, played by William Roache, was celebrated as an early soap opera "supercouple," with their 1962 wedding attracting over 15 million viewers. Reid's character faced intense storylines, including a hostage situation, before being written out in 1971 after a tragic electrocution incident. Beyond Coronation Street, she has starred in notable roles such as Jean in Dinnerladies and Celia Dawson in Last Tango in Halifax.
