Bucks Fizz Named Best UK Eurovision Entry as Cheryl Baker Backs This Year's Act
Bucks Fizz Best UK Eurovision Entry; Cheryl Baker Backs New Act

Bucks Fizz's 'Making Your Mind Up' has been crowned the greatest British Eurovision entry of all time, claiming the top spot for the second year in a row. The beloved group clinched the Eurovision title back in 1981 following a legendary performance at the contest held in Dublin.

Survey Results

The survey of 2,000 adults commissioned by WhichBingo, which is hosting its annual industry awards tonight, placed Sam Ryder's 'Space Man' in second place, with Brotherhood of Man's 'Save Your Kisses for Me' taking third. Cliff Richard's debut Eurovision entry from 1968, 'Congratulations', and Katrina and the Waves' 'Love Shine a Light' - the UK's last Eurovision victory in 1997 - rounded out the top five.

Cheryl Baker, who triumphed at Eurovision as part of Bucks Fizz in 1981, said: "It's fabulous. To still come out on top again after all these years is unbelievable really, and I'm thrilled."

Optimism for This Year

Fans are quietly optimistic that the UK could end its 29-year drought for a Eurovision victory, with 19% believing Look Mum No Computer could beat the competition this year.

Cheryl Baker, who is appearing at this year's WhichBingo Awards, shared her thoughts on this year's entry: "I actually think our boy's going to do really well this year - at the very least I think we'll finally be on the left-hand side of the scoreboard rather than the right-hand side. It's fun, it's different, and Eurovision audiences love that. I've seen the rehearsals and he's got dancers with these television screens - it looks great and could do really well."

Winning Formula

According to the research, the winning formula for a Eurovision-conquering entry involves a catchy, memorable chorus, an unforgettable hook, and a powerful vocal performance. Additional crucial elements included featuring a charismatic performer audiences want to support, and delivering a sense of fun, camp or chaos.

The findings reveal the UK remains devoted to Eurovision, with 34% of adults tuning into the final every year, or most years, while half still take pride in Sam Ryder's performance four years ago when he finished runner-up.

Nevertheless, three in 10 believe the UK's entries have deteriorated in recent years, with 24% suggesting we ought to approach it more seriously. Furthermore, 27% would like Ed Sheeran to represent the UK, with Adele and Harry Styles among other preferred acts.

Shaun Frackleton of WhichBingo said: "We're backing LOOK MUM NO COMPUTER to go all the way, but how cool would it be if Ed Sheeran stepped out for Britain one year? As our research shows, there's a few different factors which go into a knockout Eurovision performance. If they can stick close to them, there's no reason Britain can't go all the way."
