Cannes 2026 Festival Lineup Dominated by International Auteurs
The 79th Cannes Film Festival, scheduled to run from May 12 to 23, has announced a lineup heavily featuring acclaimed international auteurs, with premieres from Spanish director Pedro Almodovar, Polish filmmaker Paweł Pawlikowski, and Japanese writer-director Ryusuke Hamaguchi. Organizers revealed the selections at a news conference in Paris, emphasising the festival's focus on artistic cinema over Hollywood blockbusters.
Competition Highlights and Palme d'Or Contenders
In the prestigious competition section, 21 films will vie for the Palme d'Or. Notable entries include Pawlikowski's Cold War drama Fatherland, starring Sandra Hüller; Hamaguchi's French-language debut Sudden; and Almodovar's Bitter Christmas. The lineup is notably light on American productions, with Ira Sachs' The Man I Love, a New York story set during the 1980s AIDS crisis starring Rami Malek, being a rare exception.
Returning Palme Winners and Notable Sidebar Selections
Several former Palme d'Or winners are returning to Cannes. Romanian auteur Cristian Mungiu presents Fjord, a Norway-set film featuring Renate Reinsve and Sebastian Stan, while Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda debuts the sci-fi drama Sheep in the Box. In the Un Certain Regard sidebar, Jane Schoenbrun will premiere Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, a film about making a slasher movie, starring Hannah Einbinder and Gillian Anderson.
Distribution and Festival Logistics
Specialty distributor Neon has secured rights to Fjord, Sheep in the Box, and Sudden, positioning itself to extend its record of six consecutive Palme wins. Out of competition, Nicolas Winding Refn's thriller Her Private Hell and John Travolta's directorial debut Propeller One-Way Night Coach will screen. The festival opens with the 1920s French film The Electric Kiss, and requires competition entries to have theatrical distribution, excluding streaming titles like Netflix films.
Jury and Honours
Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook will chair the nine-member jury deciding the Palme d'Or, with honorary Palmes awarded to Barbra Streisand and Peter Jackson. Artistic director Thierry Fremaux noted that 2,541 feature films were submitted, reflecting Cannes' role as a global launchpad for Oscar contenders, following 2025's success with films like Sentimental Value and The Secret Agent.
