John Dickerson, a veteran CBS News journalist, has announced his resignation from the network, becoming the latest high-profile figure to leave amid concerns over editorial independence and ownership changes. Dickerson, who served as co-anchor of CBS Evening News and previously moderated Face the Nation, revealed his departure on Instagram, stating he will leave at the end of the year.
His exit comes as CBS News undergoes significant restructuring under new editor-in-chief Bari Weiss, who is reportedly seeking a replacement anchor. Weiss has expressed interest in Bret Baier of Fox News, though Baier remains under contract. The network has faced criticism over its handling of a lawsuit settlement with the Trump administration regarding a 60 Minutes interview, which some viewed as compromising journalistic integrity.
Dickerson had previously criticised the settlement, questioning whether the network could maintain public trust after paying millions to a political figure. His resignation follows a series of departures, including a 60 Minutes executive producer who cited loss of journalistic independence, and the resignation of CBS News' president and CEO in May.
Tom Cibrowski, president of CBS News, praised Dickerson as epitomising the best of journalism. A CBS staffer expressed sadness but not surprise at the departure, noting Dickerson's excellence as a journalist. His exit likely ends the two-anchor format on CBS Evening News, which debuted in January but failed to boost ratings.
