Duke Shelby's Role in The Immortal Man Explained as Character's Future Confirmed
Barry Keoghan takes on the role of the troubled son in Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, a film that has captivated audiences following its release on Netflix after a major theatrical run. Peaky Blinders boss Steven Knight has now spoken out about Duke Shelby's ultimate fate, shedding light on the character's journey and what lies ahead.
The Immortal Man's Plot and Duke's Significance
The harrowing film follows Tommy Shelby, portrayed by Cillian Murphy, as he attempts to outrun the ghosts of his past and right his previous wrongs. One of the biggest obstacles in his path to redemption is his son, Duke, who is heading down a slippery slope towards a dangerous and violent life of crime. The film serves not only as the final chapter for one era of Peaky Blinders but also as the beginning for a new set of characters, including Duke, setting the stage for future developments in the franchise.
Who is Duke Shelby in Peaky Blinders?
Duke Shelby is the illegitimate firstborn son of Tommy Shelby and Zelda Chiriklo, a Romani girl played by Rebecca Ferguson. He was raised by his mother until her illness and death, after which he was taken in by his aunt Esme Shelby-Lee, portrayed by Aimee-Ffion Edwards. In 1934, Esme sold Duke to Tommy, leading him to Birmingham where he joined the Peaky Blinders and eventually became a full-fledged member of the Shelby family.
Recasting Duke Shelby for The Immortal Man
In the original series, Duke was played by Conrad Khan, but for the follow-up film, Irish actor Barry Keoghan took over the role. In an interview with Digital Spy, Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight explained that a six-year time jump was a key factor in the recasting decision. He stated, 'The time jump dictated who we were looking for, but equally, it's one of those castings that the minute the first rushes you look at, you realise it couldn't have been anybody else. It could only have been him because every box is ticked, plus new boxes that he creates are ticked.' Knight praised the dynamic between Keoghan and Murphy, noting, 'To see Barry and Cillian either side of a bar drinking whiskey and looking at each other and not even saying anything is just magnificent.'
Duke Shelby's Mother and Background
Duke's mother was Zelda Chiriklo, with little known about her past except that she and her twin sister Kaulo belonged to a Romani community. Zelda and Tommy met in May 1914 at the Appleby Horse Fair when she stole his watch, prompting Tommy to chase after her. Their encounter took a drastic turn, resulting in Zelda falling pregnant with Duke. Tommy was subsequently sent away to fight in the First World War and never saw Zelda again, leaving Duke's early life shaped by absence and struggle.
Will Duke Shelby Return in Peaky Blinders?
A sequel series has already been announced, consisting of two seasons that will explore a new generation of Shelbys. Knight confirmed in an interview with slashfilm.com that Duke Shelby will return in some capacity, saying, 'The son character will feature in what goes forward. So, it's a continuation of the Shelby family story, really.' After Tommy's death at the end of The Immortal Man, Duke assumes the position as the leader of the Peaky Blinders, hinting at a prominent role in the upcoming series. While Knight has not revealed further details about Duke's future involvement, it appears his name will resurface once more, promising exciting developments for fans.
