Warner Bros. Reveals New Aragorn for Lord of the Rings Prequel
In a major announcement at CinemaCon on Tuesday, Warner Bros. confirmed that Jamie Dornan will take over the role of Strider, also known as Aragorn, in the upcoming prequel Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. The film is scheduled for theatrical release on December 17, 2027, and will see Dornan replacing Viggo Mortensen, who originally portrayed the character in Peter Jackson's iconic trilogy.
Dornan Steps into a Legendary Role
The 43-year-old Irish actor, known for his roles in Belfast, the Fifty Shades trilogy, and The Fall, was selected to play the 80-something-year-old chief of the Northern Dúnedain Rangers, who eventually becomes King Elessar Telcontar. Interestingly, Dornan is the same age Mortensen was when he replaced Stuart Townsend in The Fellowship of the Ring back in 2001.
Mortensen, now 67, last played Aragorn 23 years ago and had expressed openness to reprising the role in a 2024 interview with British GQ. He stated, "I like playing that character. I learned a lot playing the character. I enjoyed it a lot. I would only do it if I was right for it in terms of, you know, the age I am now and so forth. It would be silly to do it otherwise." However, the studio has opted for a younger actor to lead the new film.
Supporting Cast and Creative Team Details
The prequel, set between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring, will feature an ensemble cast. Andy Serkis will direct and reprise his role as Gollum/Sméagol, while Elijah Wood returns as Frodo Baggins, Lee Pace as elven King Thranduil, and Kate Winslet joins as the mysterious Marigol. Additionally, Leo Woodall, who was rumored for the Aragorn role, will instead play Dúnedain ranger Halvard, accompanying Strider and Gandalf, portrayed by Ian McKellen, on their mission to capture Gollum.
The screenplay has been penned by Lord of the Rings screenwriters Philippa Boyens and Fran Walsh, along with Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou. Filming is set to commence later this year in Wellington, New Zealand. Serkis commented in a statement, "Across two trilogies, a mark of a Middle-earth film has always been the formidable array of talent brought to bear in every role. The Hunt for Gollum continues in that tradition, and I am delighted to announce the return of two of Middle-earth's most beloved performers, alongside some exceptionally talented new additions to Tolkien's world."
Mixed Reactions from Fans on Social Media
The casting news has sparked a divided response among Lord of the Rings enthusiasts on Instagram. Some fans expressed excitement, with user @breecrossroads writing in all caps, "JAMIE DORNAN. HELL YEAH. AND LEEEEE PACE! AGGHHHHHHH." Others praised Dornan's suitability, such as @tristan_fredrick, who noted, "From a looks wise Jamie is fantastic for Aragorn."
However, many loyalists voiced disappointment over Mortensen's absence. User @elijasaurus_rex stated bluntly, "If it ain't Viggo, it AIN'T ARAGORN," while @wolfbornspirit agreed, commenting, "No. Not without Viggo. He was, is and always will be Aragorn." Some fans injected humor, with @mina_erickson quipping, "50 shades of Gollum," and @charliethomason joking, "Kate Winslet to Jamie Dornan in LOTR: 'draw me like one of your Rivendell girls.'"
Upcoming Projects for the Actors
Meanwhile, Viggo Mortensen will next appear in Porto Rico, a biopic on José Maldonado Román starring Bad Bunny, Javier Bardem, and Edward Norton. Jamie Dornan has several films in the pipeline, including The Undertow, Love Is Not the Answer, and The Turning Door. On a personal note, Dornan and his wife, composer Amelia Warner, will celebrate their 13th wedding anniversary on April 26, and they are parents to three daughters: Dulcie, 12, Elva, 10, and Alberta, seven.
As anticipation builds for The Hunt for Gollum, the casting of Jamie Dornan marks a significant shift in the Lord of the Rings cinematic universe, promising a fresh take on a beloved character while honoring the legacy of the original films.
