Cinematic nostalgia and irreverent humour took centre stage at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, as the long-awaited sequel to the beloved parody film "Spaceballs" was officially unveiled. The event, held at Caesar's Palace, featured a playful presentation that offered a first look at the satire, marking a new era for the cult classic.
Comedy Legend Announces Sequel Title
Comedy icon Mel Brooks, appearing via a pre-recorded video message, revealed the sequel's title as "Spaceballs: The New One." With his trademark wit, Brooks humorously added, "It's just like the old one, but it's newer." He further explained that the film wasn't titled "Spaceballs: The Search for More Money" because he had already "found the money. It was in his basement." Brooks attributed his physical absence from the event to "seeing Phish at the Sphere," adding a layer of his characteristic comedic flair to the announcement.
Surprise Appearance and Running Gags
The presentation included a surprise appearance by Rick Moranis, a key cast member from the original film, which drew a significant reaction from the audience. Moranis's lines were intentionally cut short as part of a running gag, maintaining the film's playful tone. The sizzle reel shown at the event featured a voiceover that quipped about Hollywood studio mergers, specifically noting Amazon's acquisition of MGM and how it "opened the vault" for this project.
Amazon MGM Studios' Extensive Showcase
The "Spaceballs" announcement was just one highlight of Amazon MGM Studios' comprehensive presentation to theatre owners. The studio also offered initial glimpses of several other high-profile projects. These included Peter Farrelly's Sylvester Stallone biopic titled "I Play Rocky," and Michael B. Jordan's new take on "The Thomas Crown Affair," which he both directs and stars in alongside Adria Arjona.
Michael B. Jordan's Personal Connection
Jordan, described as the newly minted best actor Oscar winner for his dual performance in "Sinners," expressed a deep personal connection to "The Thomas Crown Affair." He stated, "I've been daydreaming about making this movie for years," recalling how he watched the 1999 version at age 12 and it "left a very big impression on me." For his rendition, Jordan aims to infuse the style, sophistication, and rebellion he admired, while crafting a character "someone you can root for." Jon Batiste also shared a snippet of the score he is composing for the film.
Studio's Theatrical Commitment and Successes
Amazon MGM Studios received a warm reception from exhibitors, bolstered by their recent theatrical achievements and a commitment to release 15 movies annually by 2027. Their film "Project Hail Mary" continues to perform strongly, having amassed over $515 million globally, and is set to return to IMAX theatres for a week. Filmmakers Phil Lord and Chris Miller, joined by Ryan Gosling, made a surprise appearance to thank exhibitors, with Miller asserting, "This movie is now the biggest original movie of the year because you believed in it."
Additional Film Previews
Further previews at the event included the summer release "Masters of the Universe," starring Nicholas Galitzine, and the family film "The Sheep Detectives," featuring Galitzine, Hugh Jackman, and Nicholas Braun. Pete Davidson and David Leitch presented their "gonzo action pic" "How to Rob a Bank," with Davidson declaring, "This movie is totally insane." Audiences also saw first looks at Henry Cavill in "Highlander" and Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson in the adaptation of Colleen Hoover's psychological thriller "Verity."
Notable Absence: James Bond Updates
Conspicuously absent from the announcements was any news regarding the James Bond franchise. Amazon acquired MGM in 2021 for $8.45 billion, largely due to the iconic 007 property. Last year, the studio announced it had assumed creative control, with longtime custodians Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli stepping back, and Denis Villeneuve tapped to direct the next installment, produced by Amy Pascal and David Heyman. However, details about the next Bond film, including casting for the agent, remain scarce. Courtenay Valenti, Amazon MGM's head of film, assured, "we're taking time to do this with care and deep respect."
The "Spaceballs" sequel is slated for release next year, promising to deliver the same satirical humour that made the original a cult favourite, while embracing new creative directions under Amazon MGM Studios' stewardship.
