Lionel Messi has been forced to deny unfounded rumours of an affair with Telefe journalist Sofi Martinez, with his wife Antonela Roccuzzo also stepping in to support the falsely accused reporter. The speculation emerged during Argentina's World Cup campaign, where Messi has scored eight goals and led his team to the quarter-finals.
Messi Playfully Mocks Allegations
Following Argentina's second-round victory over Cape Verde, Messi deliberately approached Martinez to address the rumours directly. After a warm embrace, Messi said: "When I look at you, they ask why I'm looking at you. And when I greet you, they ask why I'm greeting you." Martinez replied: "These are all lies."
Wife's Support
Antonela Roccuzzo, Messi's wife and mother of their three children, contacted Martinez during the swirling speculation, which initially gained traction during Argentina's World Cup triumph four years ago. Martinez revealed the message from Roccuzzo: "Sofi, don't worry, ignore the nonsense."
Impact on Journalist
Martinez has spoken about the toll the rumours have taken on her family. On Argentina's Podemos Hablar show, she said: "A lot of the time when your exposure increases, it brings things that aren't so good and my family suffers a lot. This year, people began to talk more and more about, 'What's up with the way he looks at you,' things like this, and I was caught in the middle of something that made me feel ridiculous to have to clarify." She believes she has been targeted because of her gender.
Colleague's Comment
An anonymous colleague told German publication Bild: "Sofi is a very calm person. She wants nothing to do with this whole drama. Messi's life is so orderly that some people simply have to invent scandals."
Focus on World Cup
With Argentina preparing to face either Colombia or Switzerland in the quarter-finals, Messi's attention returns to the pitch. England could be a potential semi-final opponent if both teams progress.
