EastEnders actress Michelle Ryan has shared a moving tribute following the death of her former co-star Derek Martin, who played her on-screen grandfather Charlie Slater. Martin passed away on Saturday, 10th January 2026, at the age of 92.

Michelle Ryan, 41, who returned to the BBC soap in 2025 as Zoe Slater after a 20-year absence, took to Instagram on Monday to remember Martin. She recalled his friendly nature and the practical advice he offered behind the scenes.
Ryan wrote: "So sad to hear the news that Derek Martin has passed away. He was a such a friendly man, always ready with a story and practical advice, for example how weak tea is good for shock. RIP Derek. Condolences to his friends and family."
Her followers quickly offered support in the comments, with many sharing their own fond memories of the actor and his iconic character.
The Legacy of Charlie Slater
Derek Martin was best known for his role as loveable London cabbie and family patriarch Charlie Slater on EastEnders. He joined the show full-time in 2000 and remained a central figure until 2011, with occasional appearances thereafter.
His character was at the heart of one of the soap's most memorable storylines, where it was revealed that Zoe Slater was not his daughter, but his granddaughter, after Kat Slater (Jessie Wallace) confessed to being her mother.
