Aston Villa captain John McGinn has teamed up with Irn-Bru and singer Susan Boyle for a new Scotland World Cup anthem. The track, titled 'We’re Made in Scotland from Girders', reimagines the iconic Irn-Bru advert from the 1980s and aims to rally the Tartan Army ahead of the tournament.
The video features Boyle belting out her part on top of the Forth Bridge before breakdancing to a crowd. McGinn introduces her with the line 'take it to the bridge, Sue Boyle!'. Other contributors include Franz Ferdinand singer Alex Kapranos, comedian Paul Black, and 71-year-old viral star May Miller.
The tongue-in-cheek anthem touches on eye-watering ticket prices, getting into the USA, late nights, and America’s tipping culture. Standout lyrics include 'then clench those buttcheeks and pray' and 'we may not be the pundit’s favourites to win, but what we lack in flair is made up with McGinn'.
Boyle said: 'I never thought I’d be belting out an anthem on top of a bridge or breakdancing but it just goes to show that anything’s possible when you’re Made in Scotland from Girders.' The song launches on Irn-Bru’s social channels today and will be available to stream on Spotify tomorrow.
Separately, a mural of McGinn performing his goggle celebration has appeared in his hometown of Clydebank. The artwork includes his Scotland squad number and the words 'Made in Clydebank. From Girders', a nod to Irn-Bru’s slogan. McGinn said: 'The mural is absolutely top class. It's surreal to see myself on the side of someone's house.'
