Tunnock's Teacake Inventor and Scottish Women's Football Boss Honoured in Queen's Birthday Honours

Boyd Tunnock, the 86-year-old inventor of the Tunnock's Teacake, has been awarded a knighthood in the Queen's Birthday Honours for services to business and charity. Sir Boyd, whose Uddingston-based firm produces caramel wafers, snowballs, and teacakes, expressed surprise at the honour, stating, 'When you get to my age, very few things surprise you but this certainly did and I am deeply honoured and grateful to Her Majesty the Queen.'

Shelley Kerr, head coach of the Scottish women's football team since 2017, has been appointed an MBE for services to football after guiding Scotland to their first ever Women's World Cup. The 49-year-old from West Lothian said she was 'speechless' upon hearing the news, adding, 'It's a tremendous honour and one I'm immensely proud of.'

Other Scots recognised include former Labour MEP Catherine Stihler, who becomes an OBE for political service after 20 years in the European Parliament. Former Labour MP Brian Donohoe receives a knighthood for parliamentary and political service, while broadcaster Shereen Nanjiani, presenter of BBC Radio Scotland's weekend show, is appointed an MBE for services to broadcasting.

Colin Dorrance, an off-duty police officer who witnessed the Lockerbie bombing in 1988, receives an MBE. Laura Lee, chief executive of cancer charity Maggie's, is made a dame for services to cancer patients. Author Theresa Breslin and conductor Robin Ticciati receive OBEs for services to literature and music respectively.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon praised the recipients for their 'exceptional contributions' to communities across Scotland, while Scottish Secretary David Mundell highlighted Sir Boyd's economic impact and Kerr's role in boosting women's football.
