Trading Places: New Series for Rich House Poor House Fans

Channel 5 has unveiled a glimpse of a new social experiment series, 'Trading Places', which is set to captivate fans of 'Rich House Poor House'. The show will transport young participants from their familiar environments into entirely new lifestyles, promising a significant culture shock.

What is Trading Places?

The four-part series, described as an 'eye-opening' and 'provocative fish-out-of-water format', follows groups of three young people per episode. They are removed from their daily lives and immersed in a week-long, 24/7 experience within one of four extraordinary worlds, each with distinct expectations, standards, and ways of life.

A teaser posted on Instagram features participants expressing nervousness and self-awareness. One admits, 'I am nervous now,' while another confesses, 'I'm just a 24/7 princess.' Others reveal their preoccupation with appearance and the impact of social media, with one stating, 'I really rotted my brain from TikTok.'

The Four Worlds

  • Episode 1: Image-obsessed shopaholics step back in time to a 1960s-inspired, off-grid commune that rejects consumerism.
  • Episode 2: 18-year-olds who have abandoned education find themselves in the disciplined environment of a traditional elite private boarding school.
  • Episode 3: Larger-than-life party animals take Holy Orders, swapping £800 nights out for a religious brotherhood dedicated to simplicity and service.
  • Episode 4: Three pampered young Brits become cowboys and cowgirls on a Wild West ranch, where hard work and teamwork are essential for survival.

Viewer Reactions

The announcement has generated excitement on social media. One Instagram user commented, 'So excited!!!' while another said, 'Can't wait to watch this.' A third viewer agreed, 'This looks good!'

What the Producers Say

Guy Davies, consultant editor for commissioning at Channel 5, remarked: 'Trading Places plunges our contributors into these alien, opposite worlds, and it’s great to see how transformative this experience can be. Like our other top-rating formats such as Rich House Poor House, we hope viewers love it too.'

Clare Mottershead, head of factual and formats at Orchard Studios, added: 'We all wonder what it would be like to have a totally different life, and the young people in this series couldn’t have leapt further out of their comfort zones. The results are both challenging and eye-opening, with plenty of tears, laughter, and genuine surprises along the way.'

'Trading Places' airs on Channel 5 on Sunday, May 10 at 9pm.
