Streaming Theatre Highlights: Corden's Farce Returns & Bach Meets Breakdance
Best Theatre to Stream: One Man, Two Guvnors Returns

This January offers a spectacular line-up of theatrical productions available to stream directly into your home, featuring a beloved British farce, glittering musical numbers, and innovative dance interpretations of classical music.

Comedy Classics and Award-Winning Musicals

The month's streaming schedule is led by the global return of a modern comedy classic. Richard Bean's "One Man, Two Guvnors," the riotous relocation of Carlo Goldoni's "The Servant of Two Masters" to 1960s Brighton, will be available worldwide on NT at Home from 13 January. The production was the sensation that catapulted James Corden to international fame, ultimately leading to his own talk show. A filmed version of Nicholas Hytner's celebrated National Theatre production previously captivated over two million viewers during the first lockdown in 2020.

Fans of musical theatre are in for a treat with "Big Night of Musicals by the National Lottery." This glitzy event, hosted by Jason Manford in Manchester, gathers songs from some of the biggest shows. The line-up includes Carrie Hope Fletcher as Calamity Jane and Marisha Wallace performing as Sally Bowles from Cabaret, alongside guests like Billy Porter and Layton Williams. It is currently streaming on BBC iPlayer.

Another powerful musical available online is "Next to Normal." The Pulitzer Prize-winning show about a family navigating mental illness made its long-awaited UK premiere at the Donmar Warehouse in 2023. Michael Longhurst's searing production, filmed during its West End transfer, is now available from National Theatre at Home.

Innovative Dance and Audio Drama

For those seeking something more experimental, "Breaking Bach" offers a unique fusion of baroque music and urban dance. Choreographer Kim Brandstrup collaborated with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment on this project, which uses breakdancing to introduce young audiences to the music of JS Bach. Acclaimed at the Edinburgh International Festival in 2025, a film documenting the project's journey is now on MarqueeTV.

Elegance of a different kind can be found in "Les Patineurs," a 2010 recording of Frederick Ashton's ballet. Royal Ballet dancers create an enchanting, half-hour fantasy of skaters on a frozen pond, offering a perfect winter warmer. It is available via Royal Ballet and Opera Stream.

Audio drama enthusiasts have a new, chilling series to explore. Original Theatre's "The Unquiet Podcast: Stories for Dark Nights" begins with an adaptation of E. Nesbit's gothic tale, "The Mass for the Dead," featuring immersive sound design by Max Pappenheim.

Shakespeare and New Thrillers

A fresh take on a Shakespearean comedy is also on offer. A 2023 production of "Much Ado About Nothing" from Canada's Stratford festival, directed by Chris Abraham, has been enhanced with new scenes by feminist playwright Erin Shields. These additions give the character Hero greater agency, adding an extra glow to the final festivities. It streams via Stratfest@Home.

Finally, for fans of mystery, a new comedy thriller titled "Murder at Midnight" is available. Written by Torben Betts, the story involves a deadly New Year's Eve party in rural Kent. A filmed version of Philip Franks' production, starring Jason Durr, will be available throughout January from Original Theatre.
