Coronation Street's James Cartwright reveals triple family heartbreak ahead of Christmas
Corrie actor James Cartwright opens up on family loss

Coronation Street actor James Cartwright has been inundated with messages of comfort from fans after speaking candidly about a series of devastating personal losses that will make this Christmas period particularly difficult. The performer, who joined the ITV soap this year as the manipulative Theo Silverton, has revealed he is grappling with the absence of three beloved family members.

A Heartbreaking Confession Away from the Cobbles

While his on-screen character is currently terrorising partner Todd Grimshaw in a harrowing coercive control storyline, James's real-life pain stems from profound grief. In a recent interview, the actor explained that this festive season will "feel very empty" following the passing of his grandfather and the loss of two family dogs.

"Very sadly, this year, we've lost both our dogs," James stated. He added, "And last year we lost my grandad, who was my best friend, just before Christmas." To navigate the palpable absence at home, his family has decided to break with tradition and will be going out for their Christmas dinner for the very first time.

New Christmas Traditions and Fond Memories

Detailing his plans for 25 December, James painted a picture of a family putting on a brave face. The day will begin with present-opening before everyone dons their best suits to head out for a meal. His mother will have an eggnog, his father a sparkling water, and James, along with his brother and sister, will likely "get giddy on buzzballs."

His thoughts, however, inevitably turn to Christmases past. "My favourite memories are from when my dear grandad was still with us," he shared. "To me those were the best Christmases because it was a full dinner table and lots of laughter."

An Outpouring of Fan Support and a Theatrical Pedigree

Upon hearing his story, supporters on social media swiftly moved to offer their sympathy and kind words. One fan commented, "I'm so sorry for your loss," while another simply wrote, "That's so sad," reflecting the wave of empathy from the Coronation Street audience.

Showbusiness runs in the Cartwright family. James is the son of acclaimed playwright Jim Cartwright, best known for the award-winning play The Rise and Fall of Little Voice. James has previously collaborated with his father, having appeared in the 2009 West End revival of that very play in the role of Billy.

On screen, viewers recently saw his character, Theo, exposed in a powerful special episode of Coronation Street that unfolded through hidden cameras, CCTV, and dashcam footage. The episode highlighted the terrifying reality of Todd's situation after months of manipulation.

Coronation Street airs on ITV1 and ITVX every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 8pm.
