In a heartening turn of events, former Nickelodeon actor Tylor Chase has been helped off the streets and into a hotel room by his one-time co-star, Daniel Curtis Lee. The news follows a viral video that revealed the 36-year-old, best known for playing Martin Qwerly, was experiencing homelessness in Riverside, California.
A Lifeline from a Former Co-Star
Daniel Curtis Lee, 34, who played Simon 'Cookie' Nelson-Cook on the same show, detailed his efforts in an Instagram reel on Monday. He described reconnecting with Chase and securing accommodation for him. During their emotional meeting, Lee facilitated a phone call between Chase and his father, which reportedly lifted the former child star's spirits.
"Love is all we can really give people sometimes, and I'm happy that he was able to have that connection with his pops," Lee said. He added that Chase was "super-receptive" to conversations about his future and that the pair shared a moment of prayer.
Authorities and Outreach Efforts
The update came just a day after the Riverside Police Department provided context on Chase's situation. Public Information Officer Ryan Railsback stated it was unclear how long Chase had been living on the streets. "We do not know how long he has been experiencing homelessness," Railsback told the Daily Mail.
Officers from the department's Public Safety Engagement Team had been contacting Chase at least weekly, consistently offering resources including temporary shelter. However, authorities confirmed that Chase had consistently declined all offers of shelter, drug or alcohol treatment, and mental health services from their outreach division.
Railsback also noted that, to his knowledge, officers had not attempted to contact Chase's relatives while he remained unhoused.
A Network of Support Forms
Lee was not alone in his efforts to help. Businessman Jake Harris, a friend of former child star Shaun Weiss, also worked to locate Chase. "Jake's been out there literally combing the streets last night for him - and he finally found him and made contact," Weiss explained.
Harris stated that he put Chase on the phone with multiple former co-stars who "explained their love for him" and encouraged him to seek treatment. "He's now in contact with all the right people to get the help he needs," Harris said. "He has a hotel room tonight to give him time to make the decision on his own."
Weiss, known for his role in The Mighty Ducks, added that Chase appeared very receptive to the idea of entering a detox programme. This collective action marks a significant step for the former actor, who starred in 33 episodes of Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide between 2004 and 2007.
