England Fans Call for Change to National Anthem
England fans have spoken: a majority believe the national anthem, God Save the King, should be replaced for sporting events. An Express Sport poll found that 55 per cent of voters want a more rousing song to represent the nation at tournaments like the World Cup.
God Save the King has long faced criticism for focusing on religion and the monarchy, which some feel does not properly represent modern England. Critics argue that the anthem lacks the unifying and stirring qualities of other nations' anthems.
Jerusalem and Land of Hope and Glory Top Alternatives
Among the suggested replacements, Jerusalem is a frontrunner, having already been used by England at the Commonwealth Games and at Test cricket matches. Land of Hope and Glory is also frequently mentioned. The poll did not specify a single alternative, but the desire for change is clear.
Flower of Scotland Voted Best World Cup Anthem
In a related poll, Express Sport readers voted Flower of Scotland as the best anthem at this summer's World Cup, with 52 per cent of the vote. Videos of Scotland fans singing it went viral during group matches. God Save the King came second with 16 per cent, followed by France's La Marseillaise at 13 per cent. Other anthems ranked lower, including the USA (4 per cent), South Africa (3 per cent), Brazil (2 per cent), Mexico (1 per cent), and Argentina (1 per cent).
The poll results reflect a growing sentiment that England's anthem should evolve to better capture the spirit of the nation and its sporting achievements.
