Alan Titchmarsh's Essential April Lawn Care Guide for Moss-Free Grass

As spring arrives in full force, garden enthusiasts are turning their attention to outdoor maintenance, with lawn care taking centre stage. With temperatures steadily rising, grass enters a phase of vigorous growth that demands consistent and attentive upkeep. The dormant winter months, during which grass conserved energy and focused on root development, are now firmly behind us, making April a pivotal time for garden preparation.

Three Critical Lawn Tasks for April

Renowned gardening expert Alan Titchmarsh, through his popular YouTube channel Gardening With Alan Titchmarsh, has detailed three essential lawn tasks that he insists gardeners "must do" in April to "make grass grow better". In a recent video, Alan emphasised that while regular mowing is a basic necessity, achieving a genuinely healthy and lush lawn requires addressing specific issues that arise after winter.

Alan opened his tutorial by noting, "Now you've probably already started to mow, but there are certain ragged areas that could do with a bit of attention." He then proceeded to outline the following key activities:

  1. Removing Moss

Following a typically damp British winter, lawns are often riddled with moss, which can stifle grass growth by blocking essential air and light. Alan advises that "now's the time to get a wire-tooth rake and pull the moss out." He recommends tearing at it vigorously, explaining that once removed, grass will receive the necessary conditions to thrive.

This process, frequently referred to as dethatching or light scarifying, clears away accumulated dead grass, moss, and thatch that impede healthy growth. April is considered an ideal month for this task due to sufficient rainfall, sunshine, and warmth, which allow grass to recover quickly. Gardeners may also choose to treat weeds and moss beforehand, enabling them to collect debris efficiently during scarification.

  2. Fixing Bare Patches

If bare patches are discovered across the lawn, Alan suggests reseeding the area as a cost-effective alternative to laying new turf. He states, "It's much cheaper." To execute this properly, he provides a step-by-step method:

    • First, dig up the compacted top layer of soil and add high-quality topsoil.
    • Firm it in with your foot until it is level with the surrounding earth.
    • Tease the soil with a fork before opening new grass seed.

Alan highlights that various grass seed types are available for different garden areas, often coming with convenient dispensers. He advises sowing seed thickly to account for birds, then lightly mixing seeds with soil using a fork before watering them in thoroughly.

  3. Neatening Lawn Edges

The final step involves inspecting lawn edges to determine if they require attention. To create a "new crisp edge", Alan recommends using a hosepipe as a guide. He explains, "Take your hosepipe and lay it along the edge of the border as a guide. Then, use a half-moon iron, making sure you follow the line of the hose to create your new edge."

After digging out the soil on the opposite side, the result is a sharper, more professional appearance that enhances the overall aesthetic of the lawn.

Additional Mowing Tips for Optimal Results

Alan also offers crucial mowing advice for this early season period. He cautions against cutting grass too short, noting that it is still relatively early in the growing cycle. "Cutting down to an inch is far better than cutting to half an inch," he advises, stressing the importance of maintaining some length to support healthy growth.

Furthermore, it is essential to remove clippings after mowing. Gathering them up prevents them from clogging the grass, thereby allowing air and light to penetrate effectively, which in turn promotes better grass development.

By adhering to these expert recommendations, gardeners can ensure their lawns remain vibrant, moss-free, and resilient throughout the spring and summer months, ultimately achieving a lush and healthy outdoor space.
