Chris Connor, a father from Smallbridge, has criticised Wardle Academy in Rochdale after his 14-year-old son Harvey was told he could not wear shorts while sitting his mock exams during a heatwave. The school had informed parents that blazers were not required but all other uniform expectations remained in place.
Threat of Internal Exclusion
When Harvey arrived to sit his first mock exams on Monday, he was threatened with internal exclusion—sitting in isolation for the day—unless he wore trousers. The teenager called his father, who drove to the school to speak to staff.
Chris Connor, 38, told the Manchester Evening News: "I said to them 'can you tell me, are you prioritising wearing pants over my son's education?' They said 'no'. So I said 'OK, are you going to let him sit his exams then'? They said 'no'. So I said 'well you are prioritising pants over education'."
He told staff that Harvey "may as well come home with me" as he wasn't sitting in isolation all day. Chris admitted he swore out of frustration as he walked out of the school, calling the member of staff he'd been dealing with 'a f****ng idiot'.
Uniform Policy Inconsistency
In a later telephone conversation with the deputy head, Chris questioned the uniform policy and said it "does not benefit boys". He recounted: "She told me it isn't a policy for girls or boys, it's just a uniform policy. I asked if I'd sent him in a skirt would he be allowed to sit his mocks and was told 'yes'. I said 'do you understand how stupid that sounds'. When I asked 'what's the difference between him wearing shorts or a skirt, she said that's our rules."
Chris, a contracts manager, said he agrees with the school having uniform rules and that Harvey abides by them "99% of the time", but feels they should be relaxed during high temperatures.
Resolution and Policy Change
After refusing to back down, Harvey was eventually allowed to sit his English and business mocks on Monday and attended in shorts again on Tuesday. Chris said: "I asked for the complaints policy and I asked them to show me the part of the uniform policy stating you can't sit exams wearing shorts. Eventually they let him in, but what's annoyed me the most is that it's already a stressful time as it is, and on the very first day of his exams he thought he was going to be put in isolation."
On Tuesday afternoon, the school sent a message to parents stating that pupils can now wear black knee-length shorts. The message said: "As always, we aim to take a sensible and empathetic approach to ensure our learners are as comfortable as possible. With predicted temperatures continuing to rise, we have reviewed our approach and we have made a further adjustment. In addition to learners not having to wear blazers, they may now wear black knee-length shorts for the remainder of this week."
A spokesperson for Wardle Academy told the M.E.N: "We cannot comment on individual cases, but we can confirm that no one has been prevented from sitting mock exams or isolated due to wearing shorts. We have already implemented a temporary amendment to our uniform, meaning that learners do not have to wear their blazers. An additional common sense adaptation to our uniform policy in response to the hot weather has been communicated with our community today."
