Dust can be a persistent nuisance in homes, but a simple trick using a common household item can keep it at bay for up to a month. Cleaning specialist Kerry, founder of Blissful Domestication, recommends wiping skirting boards and blinds with tumble dryer sheets to repel dust.
How the Hack Works
Tumble dryer sheets are manufactured with an anti-static coating to prevent clothes from clinging together while drying. When wiped across surfaces like skirting boards or blinds, the sheets absorb static electricity, which normally attracts dust particles. Additionally, the sheets are coated in fabric softener that deposits a fine waxy film, creating a protective layer that repels dust.
Kerry explained: "My top tip for a quick clean of venetian blinds? (I have them all over my house) Use a tumble dryer sheet for a quick dust. The sheet just picks up all the dust perfectly and smells amazing too. Also extremely useful for dusting the tops of your skirting board."
Step-by-Step Guide
To keep dust away from blinds and skirting boards for an extended period, follow these steps:
- Begin by running a vacuum cleaner along the skirting boards to remove loose dust and debris.
- If needed, mop the floors, then use a microfibre cloth to dry the surfaces thoroughly, ensuring no moisture remains, as dampness can attract dust.
- Run a tumble dryer sheet along your blinds, skirting boards, windowsills, and bookcases—areas particularly prone to dust buildup.
Kerry noted that this method should keep a room dust-free for a minimum of a month, though the duration depends on how much air circulates through the room daily. However, it effectively prevents dust from settling on commonly neglected surfaces, leaving the room feeling noticeably cleaner with minimal effort.
Why This Works
During warmer weather, homeowners often open windows to reduce temperatures, causing air to circulate more freely indoors. This allows dust to move about and settle on surfaces like window blinds and skirting boards, which typically have broad surfaces made from wood, plastic, or other materials that generate static electricity. This static attracts dust and grimy particles, which cling to the surface and return unless a protective layer is added. The dryer sheet hack provides that layer, repelling dust for weeks.
