Keep Rats Away with 22p Garlic Bulbs

As warmer weather arrives, the risk of encountering rats and mice around your property increases significantly. Their key breeding period began in spring, leaving them hungry, seeking shelter, and reproducing rapidly — making homes an ideal nesting spot. Neglecting to prepare and overlooking early warning signs can quickly lead to a full-scale rodent infestation, with hefty pest control bills and the genuine threat of disease.

Cheap and Effective Solution: Garlic

Fortunately, there is a straightforward and affordable solution to keep them away. Glen Peskett, a DIY expert from Saxton Blades, revealed that one everyday kitchen ingredient can ward off rats all year round: garlic. He explained: "Garlic is a favourite all around the world, it smells amazing, has health benefits and transforms any dish you put it in. But for rats? That strong, pungent smell is their absolute nightmare."

"Rats rely heavily on their sense of smell to navigate and find food. Garlic, with its strong sulfur compounds, overwhelms their sense of smell and makes them feel disoriented. These compounds are also something rats associate with toxic substances, naturally deterring them from entering your home."

The remedy is remarkably budget-friendly: a four-pack of garlic bulbs costs just 87p at Asda, working out at roughly 22p per bulb.

How to Use Garlic to Deter Rodents

Place garlic cloves strategically around entry points where rodents are most likely to enter. These creatures are typically drawn to basements, garages, kitchens, and lofts, so position cloves near any cracks and doorways on the exterior of your property. Garlic oil, cayenne pepper, and apple cider vinegar can also be effective deterrents.

Additional Prevention Measures

However, repellents alone are not the complete answer. Tackling clutter removes potential hiding places for nests. Food waste is another significant draw for rats, so ensure bins are firmly sealed, dispose of rubbish regularly, and clean up spills immediately. Finally, inspect your property for any openings, especially under doors or around vents, and seal them — even tiny gaps can allow rodents to slip through.
