As summer temperatures soar, lawns often turn brown, patchy, and brittle due to heat-induced dormancy. However, gardening experts emphasize that one simple task—proper watering—can keep grass thick and green even in scorching conditions.
Watering Deeply and Infrequently Is Key
Nick, founder and CEO of Green Grass, recommends watering lawns thoroughly with a sprinkler for 40 minutes to an hour every other day. “That’s enough to soak the soil and encourage deep root growth – the key to healthy lawns in hot weather,” he explained. For those with less time, watering every three to four days is the minimum to maintain some color, though the lawn will be less vibrant.
One Inch of Water Per Week
Gardeners at C-I-L Lane and Garden stress that lawns need at least one inch of water per week. They advise supplying that amount all at once, not in small amounts scattered over several days. Using a rain gauge or an open can helps measure how much water the lawn receives.
Best Time to Water
Watering should be done early in the morning when absorption is best and leaves have time to dry. Midday watering wastes water through evaporation, and late evening watering increases the risk of disease. By following these guidelines, homeowners can maintain a lush, healthy lawn throughout the hottest months.
