Scafell Pike Crowned UK's Top Winter Hike in New Outdoor Ranking
Scafell Pike Named UK's Best Winter Hike Trail

Outdoor enthusiasts seeking the ultimate winter adventure now have a definitive guide, as new analysis has revealed the United Kingdom's best hikes for the colder months. The prestigious top position has been awarded to a formidable trek across England's highest peak, Scafell Pike, showcasing the nation's most rewarding and challenging winter trails.

Scafell Pike Trail Claims Premier Position

The Scafell Pike trail, starting from the Wasdale Campsite in the Lake District, has been officially crowned the UK's finest winter hike. This route ascends England's tallest mountain, which reaches an impressive 978 metres in height, attracting hikers determined to conquer the UK's most significant peaks.

According to comprehensive research conducted by outdoor specialists Blacks, the Scafell Pike trail achieved a remarkable score of 9.11 out of 10. This ranking was determined by evaluating several critical factors, including winter-specific search demand on Google, mentions of winter conditions within AllTrails reviews, overall trail ratings, and the difficulty level presented to hikers.

With the highest number of Google searches among the contenders and a substantial elevation gain of 108.59 kilometres, this trail is perfectly suited for experienced hikers looking to rigorously test their abilities against winter's demanding conditions.

Welsh and Scottish Contenders Secure High Rankings

Following closely in second place is the route up Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) via the Llanberis Path in Wales. This trail earned an overall score of 8.12 out of 10, securing its status as the highest-ranked winter hike in Wales. During winter, the path offers a long, sustained ascent that rewards strong, steady pacing and sound judgement, culminating in wide-reaching, breathtaking panoramic views across Snowdonia from the summit.

Rated an exceptional 4.8 out of five on AllTrails—one of the highest scores in the entire ranking—the route's consistent gradient and exposure at altitude present a more demanding method for tackling Yr Wyddfa during the winter season.

Completing the top three is The Old Man of Storr Circular on the Isle of Skye, which achieved a winter hike score of 7.9 out of 10. This path is not only the best-rated winter hike in Scotland but is also widely considered the most popular trek on the Isle of Skye. The hike offers spectacular views of unique rock formations, including the iconic Old Man and Needle Rock pinnacles.

With an elevation gain of 67.17 kilometres, it presents a challenging endeavour, but hikers agree the effort is immensely worthwhile for the incredible and unforgettable landscapes it reveals.

Expert Advice for Winter Hiking Preparedness

Natalie Wolfenden, an author and hiking enthusiast at Blacks, provided crucial advice for those embarking on these winter trails. She emphasised that while winter offers some of the UK's most striking mountain and forest conditions, it simultaneously places greater demands on kit selection and route planning.

'Rapidly changing weather, reduced daylight hours, and variable underfoot conditions mean winter hikes require a far more disciplined approach than at other times of year,' Wolfenden explained. 'A robust layering system is absolutely essential. This should include moisture-wicking baselayers, effective mid-layers, and a dependable insulated jacket to manage exposure over longer distances.'

She also highlighted the value of walking poles for providing stability on icy, compacted, or uneven terrain, particularly during steeper ascents and descents. 'In winter, preparation is critical. Starting your hike earlier helps maximise available daylight, while paying close attention to weather forecasts and conditions at elevation can significantly reduce risk.'

Wolfenden's final recommendations included carrying additional insulation, fuel, and hydration, especially on exposed routes where conditions can deteriorate rapidly. 'Sticking to established paths is key when snow and ice make the terrain less predictable and more hazardous,' she concluded.
