The family of a 14-year-old boy who died after a farm vehicle overturned in County Durham has paid tribute to him as a 'cheeky chappie' with an 'amazing work ethic'. Aaron Anderson sustained life-threatening injuries after a John Deere Gator was involved in a collision at a farm in Burnopfield on the evening of 21 December.
Aaron was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, where he died on Boxing Day. His family, from Consett, described him as a 'much-loved son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin, and friend' who 'would never fail to brighten up your day'. They added that he was happiest working on farms and fixing trucks, and had already received two apprenticeship offers.
Police were called to the farm at 8.25pm. A 13-year-old boy who also sustained serious injuries in the incident has since been discharged from hospital and is recovering at home. Officers are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the collision and have appealed for any witnesses to come forward.
In their tribute, Aaron's family thanked the emergency services and hospital staff for their support, and asked for privacy to grieve. The John Deere Gator is a utility vehicle commonly used on farms, larger than a quad bike but smaller than a tractor.
